Some of you know that my ex-alcoholic boyfriend was very sick and had to go to a nursing home. He had hepatitis but the kind you can recover from. He also has cirrhosis of the liver. Anyhow, he had malnutrition from drinking and throwing up so much. That caused him to get Wernicke's encephalopathy. He could not walk and they thought he had some dementia. God's good grace and modern medicine was able to prevent the brain damage with vitamin B, but he had to learn to walk again. He is walking with a cane and is going home tomorrow. It has been a little more than two months. The cirrhosis is not as bad as it could have been and the ascites is being controlled with medication. It was quite scary, and I have never read so much about the end stages of the disease. If he does not drink his doctor said some of his liver function will recover. It will never be right but it is promising that it is not failing at this time. So, that is a success story. It could have been so much worse.
Wow, that is quite the come back. I will pray that he does the right thing and keeps what health he has. He should feel thankful that you still care. I also hope he realizes just how close he came to letting the disease win. My prayers and thoughts are with you and him!
Thanks Rick, he does know that he almost died, and how lucky he is to be leaving the nursing home walking and not in a wheel chair. He worked really hard in physical therapy. Some people have to use walkers for the rest of their lives.
