I do know during an on-line meeting an anonymous member quoted an author, not CAL approved lit & they were halted/interrupted & stopped.

As I understand the Steps/Traditins/Principles I believe if I say something in a meeting is is considered "anonymous" therefore should never be referred back to me as who quoted it specificially.

There are so many ACOA's here, if u ask me the 12 steps are the same all over, I don't see the difference (truly) in the groups or in an alcoholic or an addict.  Kinda hard to seperate the codies from the ACOA's as well....

I have quoted Buddha & Jesus on the board & not sd who the quote came from ~ specifically not to tie in religion and b/c it simply held a Universal truth.

As it is unless I go off on saying F****ing every other word, we have the right to freedom of expression here, as we are expressing our emotions as adults who are learning coping skills & just trying to releive ourselves.

Like w/ anything else, u can just "change the channel" if u don't relate or like it, as it were.

If you really want the "proper" or "correct" answer I would write specifically to the World Organisation &/or John ought to be able to answer the question.

I have quoted Einstein, Presidents & a few other brilliant minds giving them props. ;)

It is that we cannot quote directly from CAL literature.

If we open our CAL (conference approved literature) and look at the page after the title page, it clearly states All rights reserved.  No part of this publication may be reproduced, stored in or introduced into a retrieval system, or transmitted, in any form, or by any means (electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise), without the prior written permission of the publisher.

I can understand wanting to share this wonderful literature with others, but I must remember this is a program of honesty, therefore I need to be conscious of the rights of publishers, and also I would not want to do anything to jeopardize a resource such as this website being shut down for violating any laws.  I'm sure many are unaware about the copyright law and so on, so just passing the knowledge on so we all can do the right thing.

I think this has been discussed before, and  I believe the WSO says CAL can be quoted for one paragraph only.  If that is wrong, please someone correct me.

In a meeting, we can only quote from CAL literature. This is true of both f2f and online meetings. However, the rules are a lot looser for this board - people here are always quoting from Getting Them Sober, for instance, though it is not CAL.

If you get the Forum magazine, you will see that they often have a note at the end of an article that says it can be reproduced online if credit is given.

I understand that long quotes from CAL literature is not allowed, for copywrite reasons.

Personally, I like to hear other 12 step stuff, or inspirational stuff of all descriptions, here on the message board. I think everyone understand that the message board is not 'strict' alanon, the way the meetings must be. There is a notice right at the top of this page which says "The material presented here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method to exchange information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal level."

John,  I know could answer this question "Beautifully."    I just know it!!.

I do like what you say about   " .... i think if something GIVES   if something ENRICHES  if something  HELPS  even ONE ..."

I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!  I want to  "quote"  "quote"  'quote" ..... ((LOL))   Cant wait to see what really is appropriate. What if any are the boundaries  here on the board and in the chat room.       "JOHN!"    ((haha))  MY Hand is Up TOO> !

The Alanon family groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience strenth and hope, in order to solve their common problems. We beleive alcoholism is a family illness and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.

Alanon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution, does not engage ion any controversay: neither opposes any cause. There are no dues for memebership. Alanon is self supporting through its own voluntary contributions.

Alanon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the 12 steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving  understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

In my opinion, because this is an alanon chat room, all quotes should be alanon. Otherwise outside material can make things more difficult for those who are new to the program to understand the philosphy of this particular program. Bringing in other materials only makes matters more confusing. I like to see it stay within the parameters of alanon, as it is in face to face meetings, as it does work. Repetition of alanon material enforces ones ability to learn a better way of life.

There are other chat rooms that are open for other materials. This is only my opinion.
