The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
The C2C for today discusses the 4th Step inventory that the program suggests as part of the 12 Steps. ur fourth step inventory shows us where we have empty spaces, and what our short-comings are - just as an inventory in a retail space points out gaps on the shelf of out of stock items.
The fourth step doesn't have to be painful or scary and we don't have to pass any judgement on what we uncover. The intent is to become aware so we can take action and break the cycle of problems caused by our own character defects. When we take our own inventory, we can then fill up with the help of the remaining steps. It is in the steps that we experience the healing power of the program. Former hurtful circumstances will still happen, but we will not react the same as before nor have the same level of hurt.
The reminder for today tells us that a searching and fearless moral inventory can help us manage just about all that bothers us - troubled about solutions to issues, nagging doubts, fears or frustrations, feeling lost or confused, etc. When we work the steps, we tell our higher power that we are ready to heal and to find a solution to feel better. The energy we used to spend on worry, tears and obsession can instead be turned into positive action.
The quote for today - "We all wish good things to happen to us, but we cannot just pray and then sit down and expect miracles to happen. We must back up our prayers with action." ~~ from Freedom From Despair
_________________________________________
The fourth step for me opened the door to a better understanding of who I am, what makes me tick and why I react as I do. It showed me that fear was at the root of most of my issues/defects, and the fear was often based in not getting what I want, not getting what I need, assuming the past repeats itself, and projecting with fear into the future. What I've learned is that no matter what has happened and no matter what I have done, this step helps me 'see' it for what it is and start changing to do and be a different person.
Living a life based on fear, anger, resentment and worry was defeating and despairing. I am so grateful to have found Al-Anon and found the freedom to live life on life's terms, allow others to grow on their own path and find peace in spite of what others are or are not doing. I have been gifted with more blessings I could ever imagine for myself, because I've been able to let go of all the negative energy I carried for so, so long.
For new members, freedom from the bondage of 'self' comes from working the steps. Keep coming back and find your peace in this program - it works if you work it and you are worth it!!
Happy Hump Day everyone!
