and Happy New Year! I hope 2016 is off to a good start for everybody. Today's reading of a focus on our phrase: "... in Al-Anon we discover that no situation is really hopeless". Like the writer, the first time I heard that spoken at a meeting I thought, 'well of course there are situations which are hopeless!'. It took me a while... And some running up against brick walls, that situations themselves are not hopeless although the people in them can give up hope. These days when I am feeling hopeless or even anxious I try to step back and see what part in it I can change by changing my own behavior. The hope comes from the changes we are willing and able to make.
The thought for the day is a reminder that situations can change and will more quickly if our attitudes change. I am thankful for the tools I have learned here to know the difference between what part of a given situation I can change. Hope you all have a great Tuesday- New England is settling into winter now so I hope wherever you are its warmer than here! 10 degrees last night!!
Good morning Mary, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the daily reading in Hope for Today.. I too felt this statement that "no situation is truly hopeless" was a bit of a stretch . When I learned to practice the principles of the program, the more I found the truth in that statement.
Changed attitudes are what it's all about. How grateful I am that I picked up the Al-Anon tools that enabled me to do just that. Prior to Al-Anon I felt hopeless, and full of anger, resentment, self-pity and fear. Today I feel serene and courageous, and willing to face life on life's terms. What a gift that is
New York City is also experiencing winter the first time this year, so I'm going to bundle up and try to stay warm. Have a great day.
Good morning Mary (and Betty) and happy new year back @ ya! I'm in KS, and it's in the low 20(s)....so we are also colder than I prefer right now....I have decided that I am already ready for spring and we have a ways to go....
I, like so many others, arrived and felt broken, hopeless and even helpless. I thought many things suggested to me and stated in the program were not within the realms of my world. Of course, as I kept coming back and tried to apply the literature, steps, slogans and suggestions to my life that I slowly felt a little peace and hope.
As I continued and regained some sanity and self-worth, it improved and continued to do so. I do agree that a shift in my attitude was necessary for there to be a shift in my expectations and actions/reactions. My hopes and 'dreams' of the past were not realistic and when I figured that out and surrendered to this program, one day at a time, I got better and hope returned.
So grateful for Al-Anon and each of you! What a great reading and even better ESH!
Make it a great day!
