Since working this new job close to 5 months, I have been commuting 2 hours a day. This caused me to stop going to the gym and pack on about 25 pounds. I feel gross and that is affecting everything. I have been in a go to work, come home, and sit on my ass funk. Work is so so. It has issues but the crazy ER type of chaos that goes along with being a director of a substance abuse rehab is like a love hate thing for me. It is stressful, but never boring. The owner of the rehab is certifiable even with his supposed 34 years sober. I butted heads some with him this week. Went on a couple job interviews for positions closer to home but that is not a "quick fix" solution. Back to the gym. Lose weight. Eat a bit better and really care for myself. THAT is what I can do to help myself NOW. I did learn this here. Will keep you all updated on my progress.

I can certainly relate to the funk you're in. Although I only commute 20 minutes each way, working full time with 2 kids and a dog makes for a very tired mom. I run errands on my lunch hour but I do try to pack a healthy salad (I am lucky to be able to eat at my desk) and make sure I have a good breakfast. I also take a high quality multi vitamin. However, I am still pretty much pooped by the time I get home at night. I make dinner and if I'm lucky I have the energy to do the dishes and a few loads of laundry let alone go to the gym. But I love the gym and I really want to go! I love how it makes me feel after a good workout. It's just trying to carve an hour out of my busy day is nearly impossible. I am always complaining that this work thing really gets in the way! Too bad I really need the paycheck and I actually do like my job and the people I work with. Just wish it was maybe 3 days a week instead of 5!
Then comes the weekend and it's cleaning, grocery shopping, more laundry and errands and hopefully a little fun and relaxation. But I have been lucky enough to be able to sneak in a few sweat sessions at the gym on the weekends. Much easier since I feel more refreshed than I do during the week. But I would like to go more than twice a week! So what is the answer? I don't have one because there just aren't enough hours in the day unless I sacrifice sleep which I won't do. Just wanted you to know you're not alone. Maybe a job you like just as much if not better will pan out closer to home.
I can relate and agree with Yankeerose also; I think of the hamsters my kids have had over the years running running running on their wheels. Sometimes the rut and routine of it gets to me. Taking care of self--physically, emotionally, spiritually....this is the place to start! Thank you for the reminder of the priority this needs to be.
I see the metaphor of taking stuff off of a overly full plate Mark. Sometimes I had to yell UNCLE!! and then turn my back on it. You know...go do. (((hugs)))
Hey Pinkchip, I can empathize for sure. I used to work two jobs, then with two kids, cats and the house there was no time to take care of myself. I took up yoga and bought a stationary bike. That helped me a lot, to be able to workout in my own home. Glad you are interviewing!!

Totally understand this! I started my job back in May and I swear I sit on my ass way more than I'd like and I've put on a few pounds. I go to the gym late now, and sometimes don't get home until 8:30 because my commute is so far. I learned that the dusting can wait because my self care is more important to me for now. I'm inspired that you're putting out your resume, though....I need to do that more and get on the ball.
thanks for the reminder to do better at self-care!

(((Pinkchip))) - lifting you up in prayers - I totally can relate as others have written. I am not sure why I am wired in such a way that when time appears short, I short-change 'me'.....it happens, I see it, I work on it and then it happens again. It can be so frustrating as we 'know better' because of what we learn in the program.
I am grateful that I've never had a very long commute. That has saved my bacon in many years of working outside the home. But I still managed to find other priorities that sidelined me.
So, my best suggestion is do what you commit to do - and if you can't get to the gym as often as you like, I adopted a self-care mantra years ago - any effort is better than no effort. My brain struggles still with black/white & right/wrong - I have to almost force or decide there are shades of gray. I can be so 'all or nothing' and have really been working on this. It seems to help me with balance as I trudge with the never-ending search.
I appreciate your share as this is my busy time and it is when I often slip as far as what is truly important. There will never be enough hours in a day to do all that we want to do, so I've been working to make me a priority and letting something else wait until tomorrow. Easier said than done!
Hang in there and know we're all pulling for you!

Awareness is key, self care has been lacking in my life as well. Thanks for the reminder to get to the gym! I need it, school hasn't been good for my body at all. Sitting and commuting 2 hours a day then getting home and sitting and studying = 30 lbs in the last 3 years. We could compete for pounds lost? Ever since you started this job I noticed a difference in your posting, but just figured it was more stressful and you were busier. Sending you love and support always!
