Hope for Today Nov 17

Good morning Everyone-

Today's reading is about the role that service plays in our recovery.  The writer speaks about her experience wmoth Alateen; that she is offered a chance to co-sponsor a group and it ends up being a huge part of her recovery.  She feels that she receives far more than she has ever given.

in my personal experience service has become an opportunity in several forms-  I have the opportunity to write here once a week about a specific reading; I have been able to share my ESH with my best friend who was leaving an alcoholic relationship; I've had the chance to read the focus for certain face to face meetings.  In every case-  absolutely without question-  I have learned more and received more than I could imagine.  I know that service is a huge part of recovery and I'm thankful for any opportunities to serve.

another way that I have thought about this:  when I came to this website a few years ago I felt like I had been washed ashore from a stormy sea.  I was exhausted, maniacal, anxious, And really did not know what to do next.  Reading posts here, feeling encouragement and comfort here, attending meetings, reading and finding a sponsor... All of these things helped to make me stronger and begin my recovery.  The idea that we are here offering this hope to one another is the greatest gift of recovery.  I'm grateful to share that journey with you!

hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday!

Mary

Thank you for this powerful share Mary. I agree that service, in any capacity has helped me to grow and gain confidence in using my alanon tools.. I love how you spoke about how simply attending a meeting, listening in a non judgmental manner, sharing here, all amount to great service.
Love the idea that "Participation is the key to harmony".

I appreciate your service.

Thank you Mary for this ESH and your share! I laugh at myself now as I remember when I first arrived and was so very broken....I felt and sincerely believed I would never have anything of value to serve others. I was reminded of basic service tasks - arranging chairs, making coffee, setting out literature and found that I was able to do small things and still have a great return on contributing no matter how broken I felt on the inside.

For me, and my recovery, I feel I must give in order to free up room in my heart, mind and body for more. Passing down what I've learned seems to make me more receptive for new messages and ways of doing things. I am very grateful that service work brings about a sense of belonging and freedom for me - no matter what level of service I am capable of.

Lovely reminder and your service here is appreciated! Happy Tuesday to one and all!
