Old Slogans

Are there any "old slogans" that everyone is grateful to let go of?  Here's a few of mine:

An eye for an eye

Fight fire with fire (although there may be a time and place, perhaps)

And the one that I found to be one of the most damaging slogans in my life:

If you can't beat em, join em.

Unfortunately I lived by a lot of those old slogans for quite a few years. Tried them all actually and none of them worked. So glad I found Alanon, the slogans are much healthier!

How about....If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.....I now think about this way different than I used to - such as, "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results = insanity!!

It's all in how I 'see' these as to what value they have or don't have!

Ha-ha-ha....like this - let's see where it goes!

Ohh good one! I've used that slogan with the wrong mindset many times myself. Maybe in conjunction with the 3 Cs of Al Anon it becomes a much better slogan ;)

I agree Rosanne. Some might see this post as pointless and giving energy to an old program best left behind. But I find value in seeing how far I've come, and when you look at the old way of doing things vs. the Al Anon way, it's refreshing to see the difference!

I am still trying to replace "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" with "Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean". It's still a struggle, I'd much rather not say anything and not have to deal with emotional fallout. I was totally raised that way, so i'ts tough, but worth it!

ooooh, Kenny, that old slogan is the light that sparks a lot of disagreements between my AW and me! I am actually having an internal discussion with myself motivating myself to say what I mean, mean what I say, and not say it mean instead of not saying anything at all, and that process just seems to take more time than she is willing to wait for a response from me, lol!

Another one for me: if someone slaps you on the cheek, turn and give them the other one. I am working to replace that with: If someone slaps you on the cheek, direct them to the nearest gym where they can find a more appropriate punching bag, and get out of reach of that second slap!

Wow Kenny I think that blew my mind a little. I'm not sure if I even recognized that one as a behavior that needed reflection. Thanks so much for your share!
