I made it to my class today, a little late so I had to squeeze in to a seat between 2 other ladies. One of them is a lovely smiling soul that I have sat with in classes before. The other was an older lady I've not met before who gave me a really dirty look when I sat down, enough to make me wonder if I'd forgotten to wear clothes or something.
Anyway the teacher gave an introductory talk about anonymity and how we would basically be getting up close and personal with each other practicing diagnostic techniques and that to discuss the physicality of a student outside the classroom was worthy of immediate suspension.
Anyway she then asked us to all "roll up our sleeves" to start with some basic stuff using our forearms and oh boy. I'd rather have my butt examined than my arms because unfortunately they are covered in a lot of ugly old scars from my early years of self loathing and non existent coping skills. So because of the way the room was ordered I was the only logical person she could partner with and she gave me a look of pure disgust (I've never met this woman and I have NO idea what her problem with me was) and started looking around trying to find someone else. It was so rude I kind of just sat there incredulously. I hadn't rolled up my sleeves yet so that wasn't it. (She was older and studying a different modality and I did hear her expressing a lot of disdain for us "health freaks" to her friend who came in after me and sat somewhere else. In fact I think her pure hate stemmed from me taking a seat she had hoped her friend would occupy...wow, get over it???).
Anyway she finally gave in and turned to me, grabbed my arm and stared at it and started poking my scars (we were NOT examining scars, we were meant to just be checking pulses and skin temp etc) and saying "oh My GOD these are obviously old, but they're SO DEEP how did you do this, they're terrible!" I felt really sick and violated with my arm in her hands, her treatment of me was horrid and let me say she FAILS at bedside manner. It's bloody obvious what my scars are and its very rare that anyone is ghoulish enough to comment on them if they see them. It took all of my effort not to wrench my arm away and slap her. I've spent my whole adult life trying to keep my arms covered so this was a really sickening moment for me and I was grateful in that moment to have a program and to be able to not react, and instead sit in silence with my HP for a few moments and ask for serenity. It came, thankfully. When she asked again "What happened to your arms" I managed to look her in the eye and say levelly "Nothing I feel inclined to discuss, thank you".
So then we had to call out the heart rates and mine was way above normal which caused people to gasp and say 'Oh my God that's so high, wow, are you OK?" Sigh. of course my heart was racing, I was upset and really not wanting any more attention directed to myself
Anyway HP and I decided to concentrate on learning and we also decided that we wouldn't do any more partnering exercises with the nasty 50 year old bitchy teenager. Thankfully there was a super nice teaching student observing the class who I guess noticed that there was something wrong because she came and offered to partner me. Yay, she was nice. Nasty lady went and partnered up with her friend and the 2 of them talked throughout the rest of the class loudly and rudely upsetting everyone. So I don't mean to be ageist, being a mature age student myself but I was really peeved to see these 2 mature females behaving like rude high-schoolers.
Anyway at the end of the class we were all standing around to watch a demonstration and I actually heard her say to her friend "Oh my God you should see what I saw on that girls arms, I got the shock of my life".
Nice.
Anyway I was grateful for my program because I would not have handled that situation well in the past; I probably would have walked out crying and never gone back. But instead I stayed, I learned and I remembered that their behaviour was about them, and nothing to do with me.
Then I got home and the texts from XAH started. "So when I come early on Friday this week what do I do, do you expect me to just sit in your driveway in my car do you?" Sigh, this hasn't been an issue for 9 years; in the past yes he has waited in the car. I replied
"don't come early?" and got a bunch of irrelevant garbage back ending again with "so I'll just sit in my car in your driveway then?" to which I replied "OK". His tone is such that he's trying to make out i am "acting crazy" by saying he can't come into my house. And I sense that he is in full bully mode and he will be early on Friday and banging on the door claiming he is "busting to go to the toilet" or some other excuse for why I have to let him in. He's not coming in, I'm not sure how I will handle it yet as he is ridiculous when he is like this and will have put a lot of effort into crafting a way to get in. I MUST also remember to make sure daughter doesn't take her keys to his house as he will have them duplicated. Sigh. Perhaps i will meet her after school and have him meet us in town somewhere but it's a big nuisance that i don't have time for.
So anyway, it's been challenging but thank HP for having a program and knowing when to use it.
On the bright side, we were meant to spend about $300 on boring diagnostic tools for this class through the university shop and I have spent a few hours on ebay finding items of equivalent quality and have saved myself $200 AND I now look forward to receiving a bright purple stethoscope, a hot pink otoscope etc, and the fob-watch I bought for timing I have to include a picture of- are there any Harry Potter fans in the house? It's just about the funnest watch I have ever seen

If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see? (Lewis Caroll)
Oh you did SO WELL. Those wings on your watch are for just in case you need it, to remind you that you are soaring. Well done using the Serenity Prayer in the middle of that happening and finding serenity. Also do you know you're already making a plan to keep the ex out? Brilliant.
Agreed .. now I'm so bad I would have had a horribly snarky comment to make .. you did fantabulous and no one has the right to grab and touch. I'm always shocked when people do that with pregnant women .. grab bellies and stuff like that. Never made sense to invade someone's space like that.
Hugs S :)

Thanks guys. I feel good that I managed to stay serene and get through my class mostly with a smile on my face. In spite of some unpleasant experiences it REALLY felt good to get out and interact productively with the outside world again.
Now instead of insisting to myself that I shouldn't HAVE to find a way to prevent face ache from trying to get into my house, I need to find creative solutions that I will enjoy and that will make me smile. Perhaps meeting daughter after school is just the thing; she and I can go for a quick coffee and he can meet us in town. Did I mention miss 12 going on 30 drinks coffee now? Ye gods. Perhaps always meeting outside the home for handovers is the best solution. Many people do that and I am sure I can work out some venues that will be enjoyable for us to be at if he keeps us waiting.

You handled yourself fantastically in class I believe. Kudos to you. It is shocking how intrusive and insensitive people can be at times. Sigh. I started drinking coffee at age 10 and I remember everyone would say oh no it is going to stunt your growth. I happen to be 5 '10 so I guess I dodged that bullet lol.
Wow, that is some health and steadiness and superpower-type calm you have going on! You got doubly tested today and you got the PhD in steadiness!
I remember being at a talk by a sex educator/columnist (Dan Savage) once and someone in the audience asked him about how to have a relationship when she had scars on her arms from old behavior. She said she was scared someone would see them and get all freaked out. And he said that basically what she had there was a nasty-person filter, because anyone who would judge her or treat her badly for her scars was a nasty person. And some people only found out they'd been with a nasty person afterwards, but her scars were a kind of radar that would prevent her from getting close to a nasty person before that person could get too close. (He also said, "Of course, you say you're afraid to disclose your scars, but you've just disclosed them to an auditorium of 2000 people! So you're braver than you think right there!")
You already had a way of discovering the nasty person when she looked daggers at you for sitting there, but I guess you double-diagnosed. So great that you were able to last out the unpleasantness and recognize that it is this woman's own horrible problem. And she's studying healthcare? What's she going to say when patients come in? "Ew, your owie is so disgusting, get away, get away!"
It is funny because I was at a pharmacy today where the woman next to me at the prescription counter had had a burn and was determined to show it to everyone at the pharmacy. All the pharmacists were so nice. "Oh, yes, that's quite a blister!" they said. "I haven't seen a blister that impressive in weeks! What a blister that is! That's some blister all right!" And they kept her happy until her medicine was ready. It's too bad the woman with the blister wasn't there to chase around your classmate - "No, come and see my blister up close! You didn't take a proper look! Come back!"
Good thinking about the kid handover too. You are inspiring!
Serenity, daughter is already towering over me so growth-stunting isn't a major concern lol! And Mattie I'm giggling like a lunatic about blister woman chasing nasty woman around. Perfect! I needed a laugh You're right and i don't have a fear of anyone I get to know intimately seeing my scars; they're just part of what makes up me but when strangers see them and comment on them then its like revealing deep private parts of my life to people I don't even know. Thinking of it as a nasty person filter is a nice idea, i'm going to keep that one.

As far as the person asking personal questions, many years ago I thought that I would be rude if I did not answer these questions. Alanon has taught me to place principles above personalities and that I have a right to my privacy. I've learned to validate myself without attacking or judging another. In the future if this happens simply saying I'm not in a position to discuss that so please respect my privacy--- works for me every time.
I'm happy that you're back in class and I love your watch eagle/angel watch.
I think you did outstanding. I will admit that I might have stood up (even late) and moved to another chair. Nobody deserves to be treated like that, and I distance myself from negative nancies as soon as I possibly can. I love Betty's response too - and I've been less kind, saying such as, I prefer to not discuss this. Not with you or anyone - as that's usually the case!
(((Hugs))) to you - congrats on getting back to class and your lovely bargains on ebay!! Woo-hoo - how cool are your tools gonna be?
