My friend, an heroin addict is getting released from prison soon & I'm scared

His drug addiction spiraled out of control over the course of several years that eventually led him to prison. He has been down a few years and being released later this year.  He started out on painkillers then went on using Heroin & whatever he could get his hands on

My biggest fear if he goes back the drug scene, his chance of surviving will be low. Prior to his arrest, his mom allowed him to live with her even knowing that he was using. I refuse to say anything to her that she's enabling him. I'm not one to give unwanted advice to anyone. She is his main support in giving him commissary money while he has been locked up.

My friend knows that when he gets out and if I suspect he is using again, that I'm done with him. While he has been locked up over the 2yrs. so far, I've learned to live "without" him by pursuing my own hobbiea & interests and forming new friendships so it will make it easier on me if I have to make the choice to leave him. Since his lockup, we keep in touch occasionally with letters & visits

I'm glad you are here! This is a great community of people who can relate to your experience that are willing to offer support and understanding, and their experiences always help me to better evaluate my situation. I live with a similar fear for a family member who is doing great at the present time, but I always have to use caution. My only bit of unsolicited advice is whatever you say, make sure to follow through on, for both you and your friend! Hope you come here often!

Welcome CountryChicMI - glad you found MIP and that you posted!

Stay in the now and keep doing what you are doing.....love yourself and keep up the things you enjoy.

If he's going to use, he will do that irregardless of what you do or don't do....that's the nature of this disease.

Keep coming back and know we're just a post away!

Country Chick I am also deaf and on bionic hearing aids...both sides and while the left side is better than the right I still participate...my wife and I have all the reading material and that helps a lot often.   Give everything a try cause this works when you work it.    ((((hugs))))     Keep coming back.   wink

Country Chick
Welcome....It doesn't matter what substance they are using, we can become fearful for them, and hope they make the right choices.

Sounds like you already have your boundaries in place and that's good. Alanon or Narconon will help you reinforce your strength
and courage, because that's what it takes for us , strong boundaries....
Keep coming back for the support you will need, plenty of experience on this board.

Hugs, Bettina
