Haven't been online in ages but....(long post)

It's been quite some time since I have been on. I thought I was doing so well in my recovery, so we'll I don't need to go to meetings or practice daily meditations, denial at its finest I guess..... Briefly, my father is a functioning alcoholic, my brother is what I consider a typical alcoholic; no job, drinking to unconsciousness, who has been fully supported by my parents for his entire life and can do no wrong in their eyes, and my mom the ultimate enabler. While I was on the inside of this craziness for a long time, about two years ago I clawed my way out. I have had very limited contact with the three of them and my kids no longer see them due to verbal and mental abuse from my father. He has called me a devil, threatened to have me fired, disowned me, degraded both myself and my husband, threatened to take me to court to see my kids and told me countless times I would pay for basically walking away from the madness. This from a man who mentally and verbally abused me my entire life, was unfaithful to my mother on numerous occasions and is the primary supplier of alcohol to my brother. He is the ultimate narcissist. Despite "falling off the al-anon recovery wagon" I have continued seeing a therapist which has helped me immensely. However, I will fast forward to Father's Day when I bumped into my brother at the store. I haven't seen him or talked to him since February 2014, however I do keep in contact with his 11-year old daughter. She told me that he was very ill and was in the hospital for several weeks in April due to kidney problems. Needless to say, I was completely shocked by his appearance..... He was very frail and had what looked like pock marks or deep wrinkles all over his face. He was very noticeably yellow, and gaunt but had a noticeable pot belly. He also had what looked like a rectangular box under his shirt attached to the middle of his chest, was wearing very thick prescription glasses and had severely chipped teeth and his nose looked skeletal. My husband thought he looked like a real life zombie. It was very awkward running into him but I did ask him how he was doing and he said he had been in the hospital recently but was doing better. He said that his liver was in pretty bad shape and he was on medication and a special diet but overall was doing much better and hadn't had a drink in three months. He said I should contact my father to wish him happy Father's Day and I told him I had nothing to say to my father. We left it at that and walked away, complete strangers who shared a childhood a lifetime ago. It was heartbreaking to say the least. My youngest son told me he really didn't even recognize him and I have to say neither did I.... I thought I had prepared myself for this, for his death, but after seeing him I realized I don't know if you can prepare for it. He is 35 years old chronologically and if he makes it that long will be 36 next month. I guess the reality of his alcohilism is staggering and so sad. A life lost long ago, relationships ruined, a daughter who will be left to pick up the pieces....... I know I need Al-Anon, but right now I guess I just need an ear and maybe some understanding. I question my decision to walk away from them. I am the selfish traitor who turned my back on my family....but the pain and chaos of watching my brother and dad kill themselves was too painful to watch so maybe I am selfish, I don't know. Anyway thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks for sharing, MyNewLife. I think your name says it all. This is about you and your life.

I can say that, due to mental illness and me coming out, I have had periods of time in my adult life when I do not have any communication with my family (parents, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) And, I have had periods of time when we work toward understanding and accepting one another and build on our relationships. For me, the decision to move 8 hours away and begin a new life apart from the madness of my family was a good decision. And, a few years later, it was a good decision for me to work to rebuild a more healthy relationship with my parents and sister. And, then a few years later, it was a good decision to give us all time and space so we didn't cause further damage to that rebuilt relationship.

For me, Alanon can apply to my life in all situations. I have been struggling with the do-I-stay-or-do-I-go question in my marriage, and I have heard from many people that what worked for them was to take things as they come, make a decision for today, for right now, and know that it is always ok to change my mind. No decision I make has to last forever, it is just for today. When I think about it, that is how I approach my relationships with my family as well. When there is a reason to stay away and not involve myself in that negative relationship, I stay away. I also give myself the permission to change my mind later and reach out to family when the situation changes. I trust myself to recognize the signs and know what is right for me.

I think you know in your gut what is right for you here. It isn't selfish to take care of yourself and your own needs first. If we don't put our own needs first, how will we be able to truly help anyone else? If we don't trust ourselves to take the actions we need to take in order to protect ourselves, who will?

(((hugs))) to you.

((((Mynewlife))))

WELCOME BACK....

I Too Grew up with an Alcoholic AFather, and his Death in 2008 is What Brought Me HERE... Because even after all the Verbal, Mental, and at Times Physical Abuse, I Still Loved Him, but I Was VERY Angry... And When I Got here, it wasn't for ME at all... It was because I Thought I Could Save My Baby Brother from the Same Fate...

THANK GOD for Al-Anon... My Brother is still here, but Still Very Much in his Disease, and Very Much Still as Sick as He has Always been, I Can Relate to A lot of Your Story, because My Mom was Queen Enabler As Well... and Really Still Is... She has Bailed My Brother Out of Every thing he ever Did, she has Kissed his Boo Boo's at Every Turn, and He too is Mid 30's... and STILL uses her when he can...

Al-Anon has Showed ME How NOT to Feel Guilty for Taking Care Of Me, and Also Showed Me How to RE-Love My Brother without putting any expectations on him of what He SHOULD do with his Life or Not Do... I Commend you for Taking Care of Yourself and Removing yourself from the Crazy Train... I Couldn't do it with My Dad... Because I Didn't have a Program when he was Alive, but I See the Difference it has made in my Life since I now have it with my Brother...

When I Started Al-Anon Many of My Family wouldn't speak to me because they Imagined It was ALL About them... They are Uneducated on what Al-Anon is and that is Not My Problem.. So They can Assume what they like, but I Will say, the Change In Me... Has Brought Change in ALL of them... and In a Good Way for the Most Part...

Al-Anon Will See you Thru, You Just have to Want things to be Different and Be Willing to make the Changes for YOU... I Can't tell you whether or not to speak to your Dad or bro, but I Can be here in Support and Know that you are Never Alone in this Disease... Regardless of what you Decide, Do it for what Makes you Happy... that's the main thing...

Something I did With My Son when it Came to My Afather, we did not Visit him unless it was around the time of 11 AM... the Reason... He was Normally still on the Couch, SOBER, and Because I did this... My Son Only has HAPPY Memories with his Pap... I NEVER Had him around him if I thought he was Drinking... Because I Didn't want him to have the Mental/Emotional Abuse I did... This Worked for ME... but May not be an Option for you, So Please Take what you Like and Leave the Rest... I'm Just Glad your Here and Reaching Out... Cause you are NOT Alone... Not Ever...

Keep Coming Back

Jozie

Mynewlife welcome back...you paint a very clear picture of the disease as your brother manifests it right up to the color of his skin and the rest.  I also use to be that color which cleared up and went to normal five years after I joined Al-Anon and then entered AA also.  We cannot fully fathom the multi-level damage the chemical does....sooo sad and scary.  Prayers for your brother that he find the door to recovery so many of us have been able to find ourselves.

I also separated from my alcoholic family and did it with my sponsors help...I had no guilt or feelings of selfishness that way as I came to understand that I was saving my own life and sanity.  For that I am responsible.  One of the possible self chosen other outcomes was suicide...again my choice as you can see I let that one go and stayed in the rooms where for me the "ear" are and have always been.  MIP also has ears.  Stick around choose serenity.   ((((In support)))) smile

Mynewlife -

Welcome back to you as well. So sorry for what you are going through - may you revisit your program and find a new level of peace and serenity.

Families are difficult at best. I've had strained relationships in different corners for as long as I've been in/around the program.

I know I have to just live my truth and trust my HP to guide me for the rest. When I feel myself feeling less than or better than, I try to pause and remember that we each have our own issues. That helps me have empathy and patience in the worst of times.

I am finding that time affects many things. Time in the program and time on the calendar. I am a work in progress and try real hard to just stay on my side of the street.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts to you and your family. This disease is so frustrating....I too hope your brother finds recovery - there is always hope!
