The material presented
here is not Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. It is a method
to exchange
information, ideas, feelings, problems and solutions on a personal
level.
I've not felt like the best version of myself the last few days, worries about things I can't control- I'm not really present.
There are several things going on I'll mention one at this time.
I think my feelings are about my lack of ability to navigate social situations, when to stand up for myself and when to live and let live.
just FYI- I'm an Alanon (person who gets all worked up over others behavior is one description) I no longer live with an alcoholic. My current husband has lot's of adult children and adult grandchildren,- He was married to 2 alcoholics over the years and I believe is an unaware Al anon- we have a very happy life- but your about to hear me complain.
Husband's grandson is getting married - I was asked or rather informed very kindly that 3 or 4 couples are staying with us for the wedding our home will tightly accommodate this with pull out couches etc. - We live in the South and hospitality is just part of life. My goal is to find a way to enjoy this and "let go" of the rest.
Some of his children accept me we enjoy each others company. Some treat everyone as if they are not "accepted" or rather their form of acceptance may be to gossip about each other- I don't get it. My husband says "that's just family"and when I think about it my family has it's own form of "pecking order" too- I've never been able to navigate that either.
There is a whole lot of eye rolling behind the back talking in this group about everyone- I'm an easy target-
One daughter tends to go to family's homes and stay a week or two at a time with her two obnoxious teenagers, last time her "visit" cost us aprox. $1000- property and cash and groceries she bought- how she got my credit card is another story, my fault actually but this lady is good at her trade! ( I know I sound horrible but none of this is me exaggerating).
If I focus on the things I do have control over and keep myself strong spiritually I'll make it through this much better- Thinking this is going to be easy is putting my head in the sand.
I need: confidence so their back biting behavior won't bother me and I need to accept things I can not control
It helped a great deal to type this out- thank you! Any positive coping techniques suggested? Any ESH ? .. go to lots of meetings- I'm aware I need that one :)

I just felt my insides tighten up reading this. Wow!
I'm not an expert or really good at setting up boundaries, but I think there needs to be in this case. Before they stay at your house, can you talk to your husband on a united front and make an action plan you can stick with- both of you. Then after that is hashed out, together go to these daughters and say you are welcome to stay, however these are the perimeters that need to be followed. If it is a problem, give them a list of local hotels they can stay.
They sound manipulative- particularly the one who stole your credit card with the two teenagers. So if they start the whole song and dance, ignore what they are saying and stick to the facts. Be a broken record: you can think what you want but in this house you may not _______. ask your husband to support in this. You will need him.
And get a safe deposit box or similar so that that daughter doesn't further take advantage of you.
Hugs and peace to you! I know it's hard to stand up to people like this. I hope this helps.

Personally, if someone stole my credit card and used it, that would be the end of any hospitality towards that person. For me she already would have crossed a boundary and wouldn't be let back in the house for quite a long time, if ever. I can't think of a situation that would make it my fault if someone used my credit card in an unauthorized manner. Even if I accidentally left it ou on top of her bed, that doesn't authorize her to use it.
Otherwise, I guess I would focus on thing si have control over as you said, and make sure you and hubby can check in with each other often away from the crowd.
Your discussion/writings could very well describe my dynFUNctional family.....I am sure others would agree!
Before recovery of any kind, I never felt I fit in...I can't fully explain why (other than my own fears, anxiety, issues) but I just felt at times on the outside looking in. I envied those who were able to flow about the family, talk kindly to everyone, hug freely, etc. That was not me!!
After I began recovery, I felt even more on the outside. But, for the first time, I truly watched, listened and learned. I have a reasonably large family and to my surprise, almost all (children excluded) belong in a recovery program. I'll not go into details, but we've got it all - addiction, ACOA, Alanon, and more....
What I truly discovered is that it is OK that I don't fit in. I am not better than or worse than, but I am different than most of them. Through recovery, I've learned to stay on my side of the street, which doesn't happen in my family. I also choose to not gossip or judge, which is also very common in my family. My family is Irish Catholic, so most indulge in adult beverages - some of the youth even do so - with their parents blessing.
We have a thief or two also as well as those who travel with 'swingers' and 'large pets' and ... I could go on and on and on.
So - I have lovingly set boundaries which include: No alcohol, No Pets (unless pre-approved), No thieves (they can stay at another home), Midnight Curfew and No Smoking.
My boundaries are such that most of my family chooses to stay with another (and I am grateful), which is fine for me. My mother has emphysema so the pets & smoking are more for her protection than the protection of my home...I love my pets, not necessarily everyone else's...
So - establish your boundaries as best you can, communicate them as lovingly as you can and then try to enjoy yourself. When I am having folks come/stay, I tend to stress a bit wanting everything 'perfect'. Slowly I am learning that it's not about me nor the state of my home, but rather about the event which is bringing us all together.
I also tend to make gratitude lists more frequently when I am going to see my family. It grounds me in the simple pleasures of my life which bring me the most joy!!
Trust your HP - this will all be OK! And - families are complicated....I've not met a single person in recovery that has a perfect family and it took me a long while to realize they don't exist...

Thank you to each of you for responding it is reassuring to be heard and understood.
I am going to try to go with the flow some, set boundaries where I can and trust my hp for the rest.
It really helped to know you have some of the same stuff going on, I'm kinda funny like that, if I know someone else has made it through I think huh well I guess I can do that too.
