Hello and THANK YOU to everyone! I feel I already know many of your since I have been lurking for several weeks now. I have gotten so much inspiration and gained so much from the posts here and the member shares. This board has been a life saver for me since I found it.
I am the wife of an AH, the child of a deceased (sober for 10 hrs before he died) AF, and have been surrounded by severe denial my WHOLE life!
I recently said ENOUGH and sought an attorney (the very day my AH got his DUI....the catalyst that seems to have truly gotten his attention). Both his father and mine were A's, as was his ex father-in-law and many, many of our family members.
Both of our parents had stopped drinking prior to us meeting and both of our fathers are now deceased. His mother is also deceased and he is estranged from his severely disfunctional brothers (though they are not A's to my knowledge...just MESSED UP). The dysfunction began with a horrific childhood of insanity (untold physical, emotional, and mental abuse).
I was lucky, I suppose, in that my father was not physically abusive, bud did have issues I now recognize as emotional abuse. My mother was, and still is, an amazingly wonderful lady, but is the consummate enabler, living in a state of DENIAL at ALL times. She did, however, attend Al-Anon and did make us go (for which I am eternally greatful). She is a truly amazing lady and her picture could be posted in Websters beside (Uncnditional Love)!
I've been married to AH for 20 years....so I've watched this disease progress into the overwhelming monster. I have handled it poorly!!!
When I got the call from the trooper, I was almost relieved. I have lived on pins and needles so long waiting for that call. Thank God no one was injured!
I did go to the jail to deal with some issues with the vehicle, but did not intend to bail him out. It is rather impossible to explain, but I was given NO CHOICE. It would be improper to explain here. I did not even get the luxury of an 8 hour "cooling off period" and had to post bond & take this truly DRUNK person home, deal with him blaming ME because he nearly ran over a Trooper, lock him in another part of the house, take all the keys, dead bolt everything, make sure my daughter could sleep after all this insanity, get her to school and to try to deal with life in general. I'm certain everyone here knows the drill.
The next morning he was trying to wiggle out of it (of course), so I put him out!
That week was one of the most stressful and most enlightening weeks I have ever had. I wouldn't even tell him they were going to reduce the charges (he couldn't remember of course) & I would not help him handle anything! Instead I went to see the attorney. He was not in, so I left my info to wait for a call....
Calls came alright, but they were from AH...incessantly.
After another three day solid drunk, he reached out to a man to help him into AA. He actually went!! I was shocked! Then he continued to go, daily, but was so heavily dependent on alcohol that he was still drinking quite a lot. After several meetings, I allowed him to come take a shower and asked him to go to church to support our daughter in a "function", which he did. He stayed around talking and crying with every breath for that day and continued to cry for no less than a solid 10 days. (I have NEVER seen him cry in 20 years). He told me so many things I had never known, from how he started drinking at 10 and that he was actually drinking at least 30 beers every day now. It blew my mind. He also admitted he was powerless over alcohol had no idea how to quit. AA has answered that for him. He detoxed himself at home (to everyone's amazement), but it took almost 3 weeks to go from 30+ beers a day to none. He's now almost two months sober, has a sponsor, attends AA regularly, is DEALING WITH IS OWN PROBLEMS AND ISSUES WHICH RESULTED FROM HIS ARREST, and is actually working the program!!!!!
So this is where he is now and I am working on me! There have been great days, good days, and days where we both had to take it one second at a time. I did put the divorce off and we are trying. It's almost impossible to remember what it was like when he was drinking incessantly. It's like another world.
I do realize this sounds like a grand BS advertisement for a treatment program, but it's not. There's no reason to go into 20 years of hell. It's counterproductive. And, I won't lie, there are many days that I wish I had a better insight into the right way to handle things. Sometimes I just don't understand what is going on in my own head...let alone his and I am trying desperately to stay in my own problems and let him deal with his. I am a PERFECT enabler so it is really hard to do the right thing....but I'm trying.
I know this is not about our A, but background lets others know where you are coming from. I have experienced the things I have read here and have thought each of your thoughts. I have lived a lifetime of alcoholic hell and it is time for it to end!!!
I want to work on me now!
I truly appreciate this site and each day I look forward to reading what has been written. Al-Anon is very very small in my area. The only group is 20 miles away and meets once or twice a week. I have tried it for the six suggested meetings, but have found this particular group to be ineffective. That is why this site is incredibly important to me. I am using it, along with the approved literature for AA and Al-Anon to help me in my journey. I am also seeking local support from others in similar situations.
Thank you for everything. I don't know if you realize how much you help others, but you have certainly helped me!
It's very nice to meet you, Doing. And thank YOU for sharing!
It sound's like you've been through a lot and reached out to all of the right places for help. Good on you!
I look forward to hearing more from you.

Doing...most of us are here giving back what was freely given to us so that we could on a daily basis experience the ESH you have experienced. Our program has a 12th step. "Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps we tried to carry this message to others and practice these principles in all our affairs" We have to give it away to keep it and loosing it is not acceptable. Glad it worked on you and brought you here. Now you can practice what has been given you. Pass it on. Keep coming back. (((((Hugs)))))
Welcome "Domgmybest"- You cetainly are!!! I am pleased that you have found Miracles in Progress and have decided to share the journey.
I can readily identify with your experience and know that you will find alanon tools invaluable.
Please keep coming back
Welcome to MIP and thanks for your post. Your ESH is inspiring and a detailed reminder of how cunning, baffling and powerful this disease is.
May your road continue to be improving each day and may you have peace and serenity no matter what happens around you.
Take care and stick around!

Thank you for the kind words! Today was especially hard as AH had to face his work "punishment" for his DUI (although it was dropped to a much, much lesser offense). He found out on Monday (he travels) and had to wait until late today for complete "answers". The penalty is going to be severe financially for a little while, but we will cope.
Although he has yet to tell me exactly what happened, he says he will explain in the morning and (applause please) LOL.....I kept my cool and said that would be great. I then told him that he did not have to tell me except to let me know what to expect financially, as the rest was NOMB. again, that stunned him because I would have stopped at NOTHING hell hacking him about it just a few short weeks ago. THANK YOU AL-ANON!!!! It was then that he assured me that he didn't drink this week!!!! For once, I honestly believe him (for so many reasons). Just the knowledge that he knew I wanted to know if he had "slipped" under the stress and was compelled to ease my mind is a complete turn-around. He elaborated only to say he had spent his stressful time reading his AA books.
Lord I am trying to do the right thing and it is so hard! I am not good at following programs, but I BELIEVE in this one! Apparently he is still working his program and trying to be cognizant of my feelings. He even brought me some special "popcorn" that I wanted and could not find here (which NEVER would have entered his mind a few months ago).
I say all of this to let others know that there is hope! I honestly never believed he would really ever quit because a few years ago he quit for six months (without a program) and swears that was the worst six months of his life. This is different!
I feel so good NOT asking if he was drinking and NOT badgering him about other issues. It makes me almost believe I may make it through this thing and be a better person on the other side. The Serenity Prayer is my "mantra" now and This site is my glimpse of hope and my reminder of what will surely happen if I don't accept my part in our issues.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! I simply cannot say it enough!
Doing my best - Thanks for sharing your experience, strength, and hope....You showed a lot of strength in that share/post even if you don't know it. I know it's been a painful journey, but I think your awareness and processing of things is pretty far along. I think you will have much to offer others as well.
Doing my best - I agree 100% with pinkchip - great strength & courage! Not only did you use some tools, you see the results of small changes for you and by you that are healthy and long-lasting...
May today be great for you and may you grow with all of us - one day at a time - with this program, our tools, our readings & our HP!
Make it a great day!

WELCOME :) SO Very Glad you are Here, Yes I too Can Relate to your story a lot of the Dynamics seem Similar to my Up Bringing and Family as Well... You have Landed at your Soft Spot I Promise you, I Started here myself after loosing my AFather to this Disease, I have A's All around Me, but this Program has Lifted Me BACK to Sanity Time and Time again, Not always Posting, but Reading, ESH After ESH, Just Reminds me I Am Human, And In Sharing, I Also know that Even the Readers Can still be lifted even if Not responding... Sharing Truly Helped me Early On....
Welcome to Our Family, You Already have Inspired Many, What a Blessing ;)
Keep Coming Back ;)
Friends In Recovery
I too have lived with my AH's alcoholism for absolutely years. I contacted an attorney too, and started working on me. Sensing that I am slipping through his fingers, he has all but completely stopped drinking.
He is so different that I can't even imagine him going "bad" again, but we'll see.
Unfortunately I am already emotionally checked out of the marriage and it might be too little too late. But I will keep an eye on your posts and see how things go for you. It NEVER occurred to me that he might stop the drinking and be functional. I am too guarded to let myself fully expect it. He is not in any type of recovery program at all.
At the same time, I don't think I'll leave unless he gives me a really good reason to, like one more night of drunken abuse.
We'll see. I am hopeful, but still hurting. That's where I'm at right now. :)

Welcome, so glad you sought out the program here, and more importantly, that you are gaining strength and hope from it.
There can be quite a difference in felt comfort between meetings, even in the same meeting place, town, or city. I appreciate your careful wording, recognizing even as a newcomer that there are differences in how we personally react to the 'flavor' and effectiveness (for us) in each group.
I have the luxury of currently being in a larger city with dozens of meeting choices, have found variance and much value in some of the groups. As a newcomer to this online group, I can say that it is truly a gem and brings with it many caring individuals with a megaton of Experience, Strength and Hope. It has become a very valuable resource in my recovery, along with daily readings and meditation.
Glad you found Miracles In Progress, keep coming back!

"...when we try to control others, we lose the ability to manage our own lives." - Paths to Recovery
Welcome and thank you for sharing. You give me hope and that is something I really need :) I hope for you that things continue to go well. It sounds like you are doing really well with your program. So glad you are here!
You guys have really made me feel great! I don't want to pretend I have it all together by any means.
For those looking for hope....I promise I had virtually given up too. I'm not trying to say we are the "cozy couple" I would have once thought was my idea of loving, but I do think there is genuine love and respect now. Liking each other has always been harder than loving each other....that was MY addiction to him!!!
Anyway, I appreciate you guys understanding about the local group. While I did learn a great deal, I just didn't find my "fit". But that is OK too. That is what lead me here, where I feel understood and accepted without judgment.
I was asked today to help AH find a device to better listen to his AA cd's and was lucky to find the perfect thing locally at a great price. He was so appreciative of me finding it. The reason I looked was because he shared with me this morning (when he told me about the work situation), that he had spent an hour and a half in his vehicle on this trip just sitting there listening to AA literature and that was the only way he felt he could make it through this stressful time without drinking. Of course I was more than happy to help with that request, but I probably wouldn't have made the effort for any other reason. I have been trying so hard to stop doing things for him that he can do for himself.
None the less. I do honestly appreciate the shares here and the thoughts from newbies like myself and seasoned vets too. I am helped every time I open my machine to "drop in".
MIP has two meetings each day and they are outstanding! The members who attend are loving, welcoming and hard program working folks!
If you find the time, I encourage you to try one. The schedule is up at the top left!
So glad you (and AH) are finding progress in the program(s)!
Make it a great day!
