hi new here and feeling hopeful and scared

Hi everyone, so to begin I have been married for the past 16 years, and we have 5 children, I finally worked up enough courage and 6 weeks ago I left my AH who has addictions to marijauna and alcohol. It has been so extremely hard and I constantly second guess myself whether or not I have made the right decision but I guess in my heart of hearts I know that I made the best choice for myself and the kids. It has gotten to the point where I can't tell anymore if he is sober or stoned, both states mirror each other and honestly his eyes are permanently glossed over. I guess you could say the straw that broke the camels back was last year when I found out I was pregnant with our 5th baby, he flipped right out and demanded that I have an abortion, to me it wasn't a choice that was right for me, I weighed all the pros and cons and to be simply honest I knew that I would be completely on my own with this babe. I had a rough pregnancy and went into preterm labour at 31 weeks and the doctors stated straight out it was stress related, long story short they managed to stop the labour and I had her at 37 weeks. at this point he cried and cried and cried saying that he was sorry and would try harder to sober up, and I honestly think he did try to put in an effort. At this point though I have so much anger, resentment and animosity built up inside me that he could have been waiting on me hand and foot, putting grapes in my mouth while fanning me with feathers and nothing would hide all this negative feelings I have inside of me. 6 weeks after giving birth my grandma passed away and i did manage to go and see her at the hospital before she passed away, while there I had a nagging feeling I had to go home. I got home to find him passed out on the couch and baby swinging in her swing bundled in a thick sleeper, swaddled in a blanket, another blanket draped over her and a portable space heater blowing heat her way, I lost my shit on him, grabbed her and got her cooled off and I remember thinking to myself wtf am I doing with such an idiot. after that night all love and any type of positive feelings I had for him went right out the window and I slowly started pulling myself away from him. He'd come home from work flying higher than a kite, I would lose my shit on him some more, it was just turning to be such a negative place. money has been extremely tight since I'd say February and we have been living off his income alone, and to him his money is his money, I have no right to know how much he makes, I have no right to dictate how the money should be spent, in all our years married, I have either been the only income earner or the main bread winner, these last 2 years that's changed and I make less than him now. Anyways money has been tight, and 6 weeks ago he starts screaming at me, see I told you this is how it was going to be, you should have just had that fu*!ing abortion, I snapped and I slapped him and I told him I was leaving. I packed the kids up and left to my moms. I got into counseling and started al anon meetings 2 weeks ago and had 2 f2f meetings. I'm slowly building myself back up, and now realising and seeing how unhealthy our relationship truly was. He tells me all the time that he's the best I'm ever going to have and no one is going to want me again, I'm used baggage. I'm too controlling ugh the list that can go on and on for what he thinks of me right now. In the 6 weeks we have been separated I have worked on myself and see how unhealthy I am, and how much help I truly needed to fix me. I know I have made my fair share of mistakes in our marriage, but I am slowly realising that I can't help "fix" him, or love him enough to change, all I can do is fix and change myself. In the last week, I found out that he has been having parties at the house, and having random people sleeping over, so I said hell with that, and took the house back for me and our kids, he refuses to pay for any of the bills, so I got a lawyer and am taking him for child support. I go back to work in a week full time, and I know that I need to save myself. Change is hard and scary but I know I can do this, I got this!

So glad you are getting help, and I'm sorry you are going through such a terrible ordeal. I've found this to be a very supportive community that likes to listen, vent, comment, and laugh when they can. Welcome! AlAnon is working well for me. I'm hope it can help you on your way to healing.

Welcome Shanny to MIP - so glad you are here!

I applaud your resolve to find a healthy you at this point in your life. The Alanon program is wonderful at teaching us how to thrive in our life and how to find peace and serenity.

As you already know, Addiction is a cunning, baffling, powerful and progressive disease. It sucks the life out of the afflicted person as well as those who love them. I love that you've made a decision to save yourself and your children and seek a different/better way to live and be.

If you look to the top left, you will see that MIP has online meetings which might compliment your F2F meetings. I attend several times a week and it's a great group of members.

The second guessing yourself is very normal and what you are feeling is very common. Please always remember that you aren't alone and we're here for you.

Congratulations on already finding F2F meetings and doing the next right thing.

(((Hugs))) to you and again - welcome to MIP!

I impressed that you can go through all that and be able to pull yourself up, find the support you need and move on! I wallowed in self pity and it took me a long time to come to where you appear to be now.

You must be a very strong person!

Wow you are doing awesome and I commend you for taking action and making a better life for you and your children. Keep up going to the meetings and try and surround yourself with supportive friends and family. For me one of the hardest parts besides getting out of denial was telling close friends and family. Now that I have told a few people I don't feel so alone with this and I can pick up the phone and talk to a number of them. I have been amazed at how much support I have gotten. You sound very very strong so I commend you for taking these steps. As a mother I know the number one concern and focus should be on your kids. Great job.

Thanks everyone, believe me this hasn't been an easy journey, but it was a long time coming. My biggest fear was being alone and raising these kids alone, but in all honesty I was doing it alone anyways. I put my self worth on him and what a happy family we appeared to be on the outside. He's not a bad person, he's a sick person, and I thought I could fix him. I was slowly dying on the inside and so miserable, I don't know if I even loved him anymore, or loved the idea of who I could make him become. Mistakes happen, were only human, and this has been a slow agonizing process.

Hi Shanny,
I hardly ever post...but I read here all the time. I don't have a lot of f2f meetings under my belt...but I do practice.

I married my xah when I was 25 after dating him for 10. I thought I could change him if we got married. I got pregnant 2 years in, and I thought that would change him. I got pregnant again at 30 and thought that would change him. I tried EVERYTHING!!! After 5 dui's, forced detox, jail....the final straw for me was on the fifth dui, he was out around our small town with another women. Been divorced now 15 years. Raised the boys very much alone...I did not have alanon. It was awful. I got nothing for child support but I did it. He's still drinking, going to food pantrys and proud of it....not in touch with his beautiful sons. Kids were 9 and 4. If I had stayed in the alcholic nightmare...everything would have been much different.

One son (23) selling commercial real estate after graduating college, with honors.
Second son (18) graduating HS Friday night, Received Academic scholorship full tuition to a state school
And so many other good things.

God is good!

I kept them in at least one sport per season. Made them accountable for their grades, working part-time to help paying most of their own bills. Made supper for them most nights, homework, games etc. Very hectic/stressful/boring at times/lonely......but it was so worth it.

My favorite slogan is this......"Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes" repeat.

Hi Shanny and welcome! The statement you made, "I realized I was alone anyway." That has been so true for so many of us for ssssoooooo long. It has been my experience that an alcoholic just sucks the life out of you, making it feel almost impossible to leave or see past the heartbreak and horrors of the day. The good news -- at least what I am finding out -- is that now that my ex and I are split, and after a little bit of a mourning period, I find that I have all this energy to get things done that hasn't been there for years. And it isn't the manic, panicky energy that I have had before -- where I am avoiding feelings. I think it is just a re-directing of energy that I was always giving to my ex AW and didn't even realize it.

So I have been getting old projects done and, although it may sound weird to some people, I talk to myself out loud as I go through them and complete them, saying things like, "Good job Dawn! You really got a lot done today. Let's get you fed and rest for a while -- do something just for you!"

I am so glad you are here, Shanny. You will get so much from the experience, insight and care from all the people here. This place and face to face meetings literally saved my life. We are here for you! You are not alone! Hugs... Dawn
