I've mentioned that my alcoholic father in law has dementia. But he's now 82 years old. My husband who is 55 is showing signs of what I'll call forgetfulness since he hasn't been to a dr. to be diagnosed. He forgets that I've told him things but gets mad when something happens and he'll say "why didn't you tell me"? We went shopping a few weeks ago and he noticed a new storage unit and said he hadn't seen it before. Which he may not have, I 'll give him that much. A week later we took the same route to go shopping and he sees the same storage building and he says, "that's new, when did that go in"? I didn't say anything to him that we had talked about that the week before. But he clearly didn't remember talking about it.Our grandson said to him one day," Grampa, you just don't listen" and our 9 year old granddaughter told me,"Grampa repeats himself all the time". It's driving me batty because it's from all the drinking and he could have prevented this. I told him he's an accident waiting to happen.
Does he still drink? My AH did that a lot but I realized that a lot of it was that he was would forget things because he was drunk and had blacked out. Scary stuff but it goes with the disease. My thoughts are with you.
I can echo what Jazzie said. (Except when a song comes on that my wife really likes. Then, sober or drunk, I get to hear all about the history of the song and artist and band and....)
(((hugs)))

My hubby was a blackout drinker. I got tired of always being surprised by it so i treated him all the time as if he was blacked out and not remembering... that meant when he was not blacked out he still got treated like a child. He didn't like that much, but better he be crazy than me be crazy.
Thank you everyone. Yes he still drinks. He thinks he's sneaking cans of beer out early in the morning. It's kinda funny when I suddenly appear and he's trying to scoot out the door before I see him.
Or when he's getting out of the car with a beer in his hand and sees me in the window watching him. Never thought about black outs. Any more he's either drunk or working on getting that way. Either way his mind is toast. He's getting careless with things and that's what worries me. It's like keeping an eye on a 2 year old.
