Ugh. Just when you think you've become perfect, lol!
I was talking to my grandmother on the phone and I mentioned that I have received really good grades so far for my classes this semester and I'm pleased.
Now a few weeks ago she asked me how school was going and I told her it was demanding but good and she said "honestly Melissa I don't know why you are bothering, why don't you just give up?" and I didn't respond but I suppose I was obviously hurt. She texted me shortly after to say "I was joking. Good luck with your assignments". I knew she wasn't joking but I dismissed it.
Well I thought I had forgotten about it but when I spoke to her earlier and reported, happily, that I was "plowing through it" she responded by sighing heavily and saying "what's the point, you're going to be an old woman by the time you finish it".
Now I have an aunt, my grandmothers youngest, who is 48 (I am 38). She is also a single mother but chose to leave her husband for another man and says herself he never abused or behaved badly towards her, he was just "boring". I spent a lot of time with them growing up and he was and still is nice, a non-drinker, doesn't do any drugs and is generally very kind so it was a shock when she left him. Its not my business to judge or worry about what my aunt does or doesn't do but she did get the big house, cars, assets etc and has not had to struggle in any way and recently went back to school and got a diploma and she has chosen to put herself first and make the life that she wants and it's good that she is successful and good for her. None of my business right?
But I have heard a lot of "poor her" from my grandmother over the years and from my mother and I have had to really struggle with the resentment because aunt is very unkind, judgemental and honestly quite cruel towards me and prior to our divorces (they occurred at the same time) we were very close friends and talked almost daily. When she left her husband and mine left me she became nasty and critical towards me and actually made a point of maintaining a friendship with my ex-husband which was a slap in the face because he treated us dreadfully and left me homeless and destitute with a baby; he took everything I had after contributing nothing financially or materially, it was terrible. So it was quite difficult to hear my mother and grandmother yap on and on about my poor aunt when her new boyfriend didn't take her away somewhere nice enough for their anniversary or spend enough on her birthday gift or...you know, really trivial stuff while I was really doing it tough with a baby and no money, my ex husband had even taken the freaking bed he hadn't paid for and I was sleeping ON THE FLOOR!!!!! Anyway I thought I had worked my way through all of that resentment, I really truly did. I am always friendly to my aunt and speak kindly about her to other family members although she's extremely bitchy to me. Be the bigger person right?
So anyway this was all my own doing; when my grandmother said my degree is pointless and I will be an old lady by the time I finish I said "but (Aunt) is 10 years older than me and just finished her diploma and you told me how proud you are of her. Why isn't she too old?" and my grandmother said "(aunt) has worked hard and struggled (she worked part time for the last couple of years; her kids are 17 and 20). I said "how does that make any difference to whether her degree is worthwhile?" And she got angry and aid "Of course it makes a difference Melissa, she's worked very hard and she deserves success". (ie I don't).
And out it came, ridiculous baby words from me "Oh well we all know aunt is MUCH better than me don't we" and she said a very sarcastic good night and hung up.
Now I had planned to go there this Sunday (Mothers Day) which is a very long journey, and it will just be my mother, my grandmother, my daughter and my delightful aunt. I did this on Easter Sunday and she was vile to me; this time there will be no other family present. I had thought who cares, it will be nice to see my Grandmother but given our last few conversations it probably won't be very nice actually.
So maybe it would be better to not go, and what's up with me still seeking approval from someone I KNOW isn't going to give it??? And then getting angry and childish about it??
Ugh.
Anyone got any good reading suggestions for dealing with resentments? It's funny, I didnt feel one way or the other about any of these people for so many years; everything was just directed at or all about AB and now it's al starting to come to the surface, rage at my ex-husband and his wife, bitterness towards family members who treated me badly when things were hard....how did I even manage to get by with all of this crap stuffed inside me?
Ugh!!!
In other news I really have recieved good grades so far and I feel fantastic about it; I am gaining momentum and achieving more in the last year than I did in the last 10 years or more.
In other, other news A has started doing a course; quite a brave move as he struggles with reading and writing and I was surprised and pleased for him. Who knows how it will turn out but he seems quite motivated and excited and it's nice to see him doing something for himself like that. I must admit when he told me about it and he told me how nice everyone in the class is, my immediate thought was to feel embarrassed for him because I am imagining in advance the day he turns up blind drunk, raves on and on throughout the class and is thrown out. I felt the weirdest urge to protect him from this imagined scenario somehow. Nutty huh?
Anyway, babble over and thanks for listening. Thoughts on dealing with a resentment attack welcome!!!!

Dear Ms. M. First of all, congratulations on obtaining such excellent grades. You have worked hard on this journey and you are reaping the rewards.
As far as your resentments are concerned, I guess the first thing I had to learn was not to allow my family's opinion of me to distort my own vision or plans. I do believe prior toAl-Anon, I took in all the negativity and believed it.
Fortunately for me and for you. we found Al-Anon, supportive, understanding people and constructive tools to live by. My life blossomed as a result, and so is yours. My family still does not acknowledge this. I have learned to validate myself, not to argue with them for their approval and to let go. That works for me.
I sense that you did engage with grandma and that may be the cause of your resentment. Just validating yourself, stating that you believe this diploma is going to be your gateway to a fantastic life is enough.
As far as letting go resentments. Remembering that resentments hurt me and do nothing to the other person, I pray to let go of the anger, at myself for engaging, and expecting different results and the other person for not being able to see me as I am, Acceptance is the key. Once I'm able to do so, the resentment lifts.
Thanks Betty. You are always such a comfort and an inspiration.
You are right, the resentment is mostly the fact that I engaged. I was taking pride in my ability to not react, and then I wounded my own pride by "letting it get to me".
I do feel good about what I am achieving and that's really all that should matter about it.

I think when we get healthier, set the boundaries clearly with the alcoholics, we realise we must set more boundaries around others who have provided food for our self pity and victim mode. I found i was left with a bit of a vacuum and if i dont fill that vaccuum with the good stuff, based around meetings, readings, working the steps then i often get caught up in the negative stuff. I can get a resentments from my sister if im not careful but its totally on me. She is a person whose not a healthy thinker so me expecting her to be healthy is my mistake. I dont have the right. I cant change her and to give weight to her comments is taking a hurt, taking being the important word in it. Look in and see why you feel the need to take the hurt.
I'm not sure el-cee, it actually really took me by surprise. I called her to tell her something funny and was pleased to make her laugh (there I go being the dancing bear I guess). I was in a very happy mood and when the resentment came up and I reacted my mood just plummeted so quickly and stayed that way.
I did bring up my studies knowing deep down that she doesn't approve and for some reason I am trying to force her to pretend she does. She also doesn't think I should work and tells me I should't drive, or go out walking, she kind of acts as though she thinks I am mentally disabled and she was very angry when I didn't just stay living at my mothers house when A and I separated. Generally I think I feel angry and resentful that she doesn't think of me in the way I want her to think of me!!!!
My grandmother did care for me when I was young and was more or less my surrogate mother for many years. I suppose I just want her approval and I need to let go of that.

I think we all long for our Mother's approval. It's the way we're wired. It hurts when we're not loved and supported the way we need to be. But the good news here is that you most certainly posses all the tools necessary to love and support yourself very well thank you very much! ;)
Meliss, your story is very similar to my own. I celebrate your strength and courage. Congratulations on your grades.
You sound like a very family-oriented gal and, like myself, look to your family for connection and support. Unfortunately, when our families are sick and emotionally unavailable, we can let ourselves become distressed. I tried to "fix" my family and get them to care for and about me for years and years. It finally ended when my Mom passed away and everyone (siblings, aunts, cousins) drifted apart. That was so freeing for me. I didn't have to try anymore. Now that I am working on myself, I have created my "family of choice" and my new family contains very few blood relatives. Much happier now without the expectations that my family were unable to give.
I love your posts and hearing about your journey. Sending lots of positive energy your way!
Progress not perfection - the difference in my life now is that after getting sucked into someplace I don't want to go, I can look back at it and realize what happened and let it go - not let it continue to twirl me in its clutches. Before - I'd keep fighting, keep trying to explain myself or make everybody understand things from my perspective or give in and fume or.... keep it up in one form or another. Now it stops with me identifying and considering and choosing to let go and walk away.

Just wanted to say congratulations on your fantastic grades - it is brilliant that you are doing your course, very worthwhile and something that will last you a lifetime. Keep learning - for heavens sake, why not?!!!!
I find myself learning new ways of being that honour myself and my life and it sounds to me as though you are as well. One of the side effects of this is that I look at people in a new way and if they want to be spiky towards me, or to pass their own insecurities in my direction I feel more inclined to say no. As I read your post I was thinking how low one's self esteem can feel when a relationship breaks up. Some people take that out on others and it struck me that your aunt might have slipped into that later category. Well done you for not putting yourself in that situation any more. And as I think about your grand mother I wonder if there are many women in her generation who would have liked to have studied but didn't feel that they had the opportunity. There is no reason why you should worry about their reasons and I'm celebrating the fact that you are not letting folk off-load onto you any more, but sometimes thinking of a reason why people behave the way they do helps me to make it easier to accept them as they are, warts and all! (And can be a fairly effective shield against taking it personally in my own case!).
Thanks all.
Milkwood, you did give me a bit of an ah-ha actually.
Strange how sometimes the simplest of things just eludes us completely; chiefly, it isn't about me.
I did have yet another dreadful conversation with my grandmother yesterday; she called and kept asking me why I didn't seem "chirpy" and then made a comment that I REALLY blew up at. She said "Oh well you shouldn't worry that you haven't acomplished anything, your daughter is smart, one day she will have a great career and she will be able to support you". I said that was ridiculous and I can support myself and she laughed and laughed and said "Oh OK, whatever you want to believe". I got upset and then was accused of "not having a sense of humor and being a grumpy old woman". I got really upset then and spent the rest of the day feeling guilty for speaking unkindly to my dear Granny. Although I wasn't unkind, really, I just kind of whined aka "why are you so mean to me". lol. It was an awful exchange and she hung up on me. But reading here, now, I realise, it doesn't have much to do with me. And it isn't worth spending any more time feeling upset about. She's obviously unhappy about something since she keeps trying so hard to bait me into these horrible conversations.
I did decide not to go there tomorrow for Mothers Day, not because of the unpleasant conversations but simply because I worked all day on an assignment today, and I'm tired, and there is a hurricane brewing outside, and I have not done anything for me for ages. So we will stay home, and I will sleep late, clean this house because it's dreadfully messy and driving me insane, make some time to read in the bath, and I won't worry much what anyone thinks. That works for me.
Happy Mothers Day fellow Aussie mums by the way

I have an aunt who calls and says very similar things (almost the exact same things, actually). I think she wants me to feel badly about myself because her own life is so out of control.
I stopped taking calls from her. I care, but not enough to subject myself to the negativity on a regular basis. I always feel dumped on, and then it takes a while to clean the gunk off my psyche.
It was fairly easy to cut back our interractions, because we were never close (she was just trying to get closer). What's hard is the resentment with closer family members who are emotionally unavailable. I've been fighting for boundaries a while now with mom, sisters, aunts and extended family. I can tell that people don't like change, and it will take time for them to get used to the new me who doesn't put up with guilt trips and negativity. I still love them, but I'm finding my own comfortable boundaries around them--whether it means not taking every call, speaking up for myself, and sometimes saying "no" to family gatherings.
It's not easy, but it's progress. You deserve peace!
Good that you validated yourself and made a decision to take care of you. Nice work Ms.M
We are indeed powerless over others so we must take care of ourselves. :)
Great conversation! My mother is like that she likes
To dump her stuff on me. Since recovery i have put
Up firm boundaries she did not like or respect any
Of them. So now i will not discuss my upcoming
Divorce or what i am personally up to. I also limit
How long on the phone and do not go out of my way
To call her. I talk to good supportive friends instead.
She was trying to control me from afar after my ah
Left. She wanted to know who what and where I
was doing/Going. That is sick behavior but she can not
See that. I am 58 years old. Do i need my momma
To tell me what coat to wear? Did i mention highly
Dysfunctional and micromanging.
So hang tough Melly think of them as sick and protect
Yourself with good healthy boundaries. Sounds like you
Are treated as less than and you are not in any shape
Form or matter. That is their distorted thinking not yours.
Good going staying home on Mothers Day to honor
Yourself!!!
I have done the two steps forward and one step back hokey pokey more times than I can count! Honestly you just want to be accepted and loved right where you are, but unfortunately this disease does not listen to reason however much you deserve it, and you do deserve it!!!! You are awesome, accepted and loved right where you are in this life by your MIP family and are doing a great job and have come so far! Keep up the great work! Sending you love and support!
