When I think back to what led me to get together and stay for years with an active alcoholic I am coming to see that I'm kind of back in that stage of my life again. I'm living life pretty full on, or my own interpretation of that, taking some chances lately, working hard on myself and the rewards are coming. What i have noticed is that so are some of my old fears that I remember having as a teenager.
When I was younger when life got full on and i got a bit scared of myself and what I was capable of doing and being and the fear of what others thought of me, I found, way back then, a solution. I got myself a person who would never leave me, was emotionally unavailable and I sat back and put on weight, just as extra insurance that there would be no way I would be getting myself a life, a scary life, carrying extra weight of both my alcoholic and my body. So there i was for 20 years letting my full potential slip between my fingers and I was happy to see it go. To live, truly live is scary. Im going to have to get used to that fear, sit in it and enjoy it even because its time to put the old ghosts to rest now.
Great honesty and clarity LC as well as powerful 4th and 5th Step work. That is what the Steps are all about Finding out our own destructive behavior owning them so that we can be set free. I salute your progress . I was surprised to find that I valued my negative, destructive behavior as "assets" such as, sarcasm, being a loner, judging peopl eetc,I thought it made me unique. Not so I have found and am so very glad to have found a better way .
HP is a much better cure for fear
Your reflections reminds me that the reality of working this program is very real. Love the miracles of alanon
Great awareness elcee. Those are hard things to voice to
Others. I gained the weight too because my ah had no control
Over what i ate. I still have weight to come off its more
Emotional weight than anything else. It did hurt me in so
many other ways.
Ah did not like it caused problems in my marriage, made me
Feel bad about myself, Thats where the saying we get as sick
as they are in a different way. It was self destructive on my
Part i did it because he was controlling. I could control what
I ate.
I was a size 5 when i got married but have always had weight
issues all my life. Emotional weight issues again.
Was a single mom for 12 years after divorcing a verbally abusive husband. Did some dating, but had no desire to establish a permanent relationship, until the my two kids were out on their own. Had no idea that my current husband had a drinking problem for at least 11 of the 13 years that I have been with him. I sold the home that I raised the kids in, to my son to start his family and moved an hour away to be with present husband. The verbal abuse started almost immediately after I moved in, but I had no idea that it was the alcohol!! I do love him and glad that I now understand that all this time that he would have me believe it was me that caused him all his grief, that it is not me, it's his problem. I have become a better person in spite of all the trials and am grateful to al-anon, HP and MIP. I feel confident that no matter what life presents me, the tools can be applied to anything that I face and will face in the future. It is funny, when you stop fighting the fears, the fears have nothing to feed on anymore. {{HUGS}}

Wow, I can so identify LC, with everything you said. Especially the weight. 18 months ago I decided, that's it, no more extra food, no more eating over emotions. Done. I've lost quite a lot of weight and trained for and did a triathlon. AH and A step kids have hardly noticed (gone from a size 18 to a 6) but wow have I got positive reinforcement from other sources, and it feels so good. Of course that begs the question of what my excuse is now-- I guess I'll start figuring that out when I start step 4 next week.
