My story is this: My alcoholic husband took his life 5 years ago. I went to Al Anon in the 2 years before his death and also afterward. I am now 6 months into a relationship with a man who is almost 9 years sober and works his AA program faithfully. I am discovering how much work I still need to do with my own program. I really want to have a healthy relationship and am willing to do my part. The ghosts of my past keep emerging. I occasionally get caught up in fear and controlling and worry - then beat myself up for it. Has anyone else been in this position?
Hello Maine Girl, I can certainly identify with losing my husband to his disease, and then beginning to date someone in recovery. I found attending daily Al-Anon face-to-face meetings, working the Steps with a sponsor, living one day at a time, not projecting to the future or living in the past, enabled me to let go of the pain of the past so I could have a future.
Today I am happily in the same relationship for the last 27 years. Please keep coming back there is hope
Thank you so much Betty. Your story gives me hope. I certainly have a problem with projecting into the future. Unfortunately where I live there are not daily Al Anon meetings - only twice per week, but I will commit to getting to those two meetings and working the steps. And here I thought I had it "all figured out"!!
I am more than willing to work on me - I guess I sometimes get resentful that I need to do work still.
