Laurabobaura mentioned picking up books off her shelf can someone help me by telling me what books i should start with, can get from library, or when i can afford or find a meeting. I am dealing with meth and heroin addicted daughter, with a child, and an aging, addicted mother. Thank you.
Hi Kell
There are al-anon daily readers which have a page for each day of the year, "Courage To Change, One day at a Time in Al-anon" and "Hope for Today". There is also a daily reader that is not al-anon approved but is excellent called "The Language of Letting Go" by Melody Beatty.
In addition there is a book called "Pathways to recovery" which works through the 12 steps of al-anon and additionally there is a series of books called "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews that are amazing.
I bought all of them second hand from www.bookdepository.com/, and I have also seen some of them at the library.
Otherwise if you can get to a meeting they often have a lending library, just ask

I agree to all of the books mentioned above! There are many more and for me "Perfect Daughters" by Robert J Ackerman was another good one. "Getting Them Sober" by Toby Rice Drews was my number one most helpful and the 3 daily readers I bought in my al-anon face to face meetings and they are great reminders daily. Glad you are here and keep coming back. Sending you love and support on your journey!

" Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional."
"Serenity is when your body and mind are in the same place."
I hadn't heard of that one Karen, looking for it now

There is Nar-Anon specific literature also. Alanon is a much bigger and easily available resource, but there are slight differences in dealing with drug addiction vs. alcoholism. Check out nar-anon-webstore.myshopify.com/collections/books-booklets
Getting Them Sober was my go-to books until I got more into AlAnon. And there is a web site of gettingthemsoberdotcom that you can easily pick up some information too. Also anything by Melody Beattie especially the codependent no more titles (there are a few). Hope for Today is the best daily reader from AlAnon regarding having your children as addicts because it is a newer edition of daily reader. The older editions addressed spouses' addiction more than parents dealing with children, but they are all good.
The books I've found most helpful are "How Alanon Works For Families and Friends of Alcoholics", "Pathways to Recovery" which someone else mentioned, and again, as another poster mentioned, anything by Melody Beattie. "The Language of Letting Go" is a wonderful daily reader and has become my favorite for that type of book.
From a different perspective, "Waiting: A Nonbeliever's Higher Power" by Marya Hornbacher was a book I found use in, too.
