Higher Power

When my brother attended detox and they started talking about God and a higher power he was totally turned off by it. He says that the AA steps are just some sort of a cult where they push religion on a person. Is there any alternative to this part? I know they say that your higher power doesn't necessarily have to be God, that it can be anything...but he's not buying into any of it.

There are some AA-like programs that don't have the spiritual component, for those who are so turned off by this that they will not consider AA. However, in general this is used an excuse by A's who are not yet ready to put the bottle down.

So, you've posted a couple of questions about your brother - how about you? How are you doing? My husband is also a crack head - it's heartbreaking to see them killing themselves, isn't it? Do you have anybody to talk to? Or is it up to you to be the 'good kid' and prop up the rest of the family?
This is a safe place for you to talk about your feelings, if you want.
