depends on what your book is saying. are you focusing on the A being sick? or are you focusing on them avoiding drinking? and from who's point of view is it. is it from the parent to the child or is it advice to the child?
i'm sorry...i'm sick from parent to child
you can be you advice to child
i don't know. other people probably have better ideas. but tell us what direction you're going with this.
Barbara, Al-anon use to have a book titled"What is a drunk, Mama?'...I think that is the title. My home group had it, and I took it home and read it to my children , right after I started going to meetings. I remember I cried, while I read it. They might still have it in print.
The book is called "What's 'Drunk', Mama?", it's for a pretty young child, probably up to about grade three. You can still get it from alanon - just google "alanon service office" and the name of a nearby city, and see what comes up. You should get the address of someone who can sell you the book (it's very cheap). I have the Calgary Alberta address if that would be helpful to you. There is also a sort of comic (looks a lot like an Archie, but small) called "If your parents drink too much" that you can buy, again, very cheap. The "Alateen Speaks Out" booklets might be right for an older child. they are not picture books, but are written quite simply.
There is the book "What's Drunk, Mama?" - agree with others, still available. Also, there is a sort of comic strip type of literature, I had one via alateen, will have to look for it, will check up if it still available. It was obviously created in USA (I am in UK), because all the language was American - for older, teenage children, it is very good, explaining the alcoholic home from the point of view of a teenager.
I guess it depends how old the children are - anyway, I will search out that comic strip piece of literature, and get back to you.
I work at our town public library. One of the middle school counselors called and asked for books they can read to their students who have an alcoholic/drug parent. I forwarded on these titles. thank you
As a teacher I applaud you in what you are doing for your school system. I do remember how many kids are affected by alcoholic parents and alcoholism themselves in the older grades. It is great there are people like you who take action to help our school kids. ty so much, cdb :)
