Recently the topic has come up of sad songs and a few here have been posting -which got me thinking this one certainly does it for me. Another one is "Old Man, by Neil Young" Although I am unable to find the lyrics it. In my cd Neil portrays it different then how I interpret it anyway, but to me it's just the same.
Artist: Harry Chapin Song: Cat's In The Cradle
My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."
Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."
I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
Tea, This songs make me reflect on my relationship with my father whenever I hear it.
The fixer / codi in me couldn't help but look for you.

NEIL YOUNG LYRICS
"Old Man"
Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were. Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life, Twenty four and there's so much more Live alone in a paradise That makes me think of two.
Love lost, such a cost, Give me things that don't get lost. Like a coin that won't get tossed Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you I need someone to love me the whole day through Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true.
Lullabies, look in your eyes, Run around the same old town. Doesn't mean that much to me To mean that much to you.
I've been first and last Look at how the time goes past. But I'm all alone at last. Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you I need someone to love me the whole day through Ah, one look in my eyes and you can tell that's true.
Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were. Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were.

Artist: Billy Currington Song: Walk A Little Straighter
Lyrics:
I remember looking up To look up to him And I remember most the time He wasn't there I'd be waiting at the door When he got home at night He'd pass me by to go to pass out in his chair
And I'd say Walk a little straighter daddy You're swaying side to side You're footsteps make me dizzy And no matter how I try I keep tripping and stumbling If you'd look down here you'd see Walk a little straighter daddy You're leading me
He stumbled in the gym On graduation day And I couldn't help but feel So ashamed And I wasn't surprised a bit When he didn't stay He stumbled out before they called my name
And I thought Walk a little straighter daddy You're swaying side to side It's not just me who's watching you've caught everybody's eye And you're tripping and stumbling and even though I've turned 18 Walk a little straighter daddy You're still leading me
The old mans still like he always was But I love him anyway If I've learned one thing from him Its my kids will never have to say
Walk a little straighter daddy You're swaying side to side You're footsteps make me dizzy And no matter how I try I keep tripping and stumbling if you'd look down here you'd see Walk a little straighter daddy You're leading me
Yeah walk a little straighter daddy You're leading me

If we think that miracles are normal, we will expect them. And expecting a miracle is the surest way to get one.
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind Until the night
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger And finally drank away her memory Life is short but this time it was bigger Than the strength he had to get up off his knees We found him with his face down in the pillow With a note that said I'll love her till I die And when we buried him beneath the willow The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la la laaaa... La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la la laaaa...
The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath She finally drank her pain away a little at a time But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind Until the night
She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger And finally drank away his memory Life is short but this time it was bigger Than the strength she had to get up off her knees We found her with her face down in the pillow Clinging to his picture for dear life We laid her next to him beneath the willow While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby
La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la laaaa... La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la laaaa... La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la laaaa... La la la la la la la la...La la la la la la laaaa...

Let your light shine in the darkness. "I can't just bring my mind to meetings...I must also bring my heart."
It was just another story printed on the second page Underneath the Tiger's football score It said he was only eighteen, a boy about my age They found him face down on his bedroom floor
There'll be services on Friday at the Lawrence Funeral Home Then out on Mooresville highway, they'll lay him 'neath a stone...
How do you get that lonely, how do you hurt that bad To make you make the call, that havin' no life at all Is better than the life that you had How do you feel so empty, you want to let it all go How do you get that lonely... and nobody know's?
Did his girlfriend break up with him, did he buy or steal that gun? Did he lose a fight with drugs or alcohol? Did his Mom and Daddy forget to say I love you son? Did no one see the writing on the wall?
I'm not blamin' anybody, we all do the best we can I know hindsight's 20/20, but I still don't understand...
(Repeat Chorus)
