Had to put my 15 year old dog to sleep yesterday

Hi everyone - my dog was old, arthritic and losing weight. Mallard was having a hard time standing on his back legs, he started going to the bathroom in his bed ending up all over him. I didn't want him to suffer anymore so my husband took him to the vet, they said it was past time to put him down. The house is so quiet without him, I miss him already. 15 years is the longest any males has been with me. He was my friend and I will miss him a lot.

My heart goes out to you!! I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your precious dog, your friend.  It had to be such a difficult decision to make, yet you put your dog first.  My dog is only five years old, and I know how important she is to me.  My sister lost her dog a few years ago, it was a very sad time for her too.  After a time, she decided to get another dog, who would not replace the one she had, yet who she could learn to love.  It is like children, we love each one of them differently.  Time helps to heal, and it will take some time to mourn the loss of your precious dog.  One day at a time, sometimes one minute at a time.  My prayers are with you!!

I shouldn't say this but being an animal lover I will.  It is like losing a member of your family.  They are such loyal companions and the love is unconditional.  As I say this my 9 year old dog is nuzzling me for a cuddle.  They also pick up on our emotions when things are not right.   You have given your dog a beautiful gift by not letting him suffer.  Keep your chin up.  Luv Leo x

Hi, I am going through the bad experience of my little dog Shag, which is 19 years old near death right now. Also my daughter is an alcoholic and she says she no longer wants to live. I have had a very hard weekend, and am having a tough time trying to handle it. Have any of you got any advice?

Oh Robin, I had to respond as I am such an animal lover; a complete, total wuss with anything furry!! A couple of years ago I had to have my 15 year old German Shepherd put down. This was a lovely, lively girl who would gladly have given her life to protect me. The least I could do was to assure her of a comfortable life and a dignified passing. That we can give our precious pets this gift is important beyond words to describe. "Dixie" is running and playing now with all who have gone before her.

Just this morning I have returned from taking my sewwt Boston Terrier for surgery. She has what is called a salivary mucocele, which is a salivary gland gone bad, and surgery is the only way to "fix" this problem. "Baby" is a little toughy. She fell from a sheer, 50 foot cliff, and broke one rib; she was bitten in the face by a rattle snake, and killed the thing after it bit her. We neaarly lost her that time, but she trudged through like the trooper she is. So I know that she'll be just fine today, but it's the trusting look in her eyes that gets to me. When I kissed her goodby, she knew I wouldn't let anyone hurt her, and now she has this complicated operation ahead with a lot of recuperation time to come.

But why am I concentrating on ME here? I am sorry. I didn't mean to. It's just that today is an especially emotional day for me. You know that your beloved "Mallard" is happy and well now. You have done the right thing for him, and thank God you could. Remember him well, and keep him close in your heart.

With sympathy for your loss, Diva

My experience has been that the loyalty and unconditional love of our pets remains when humans fail us. I have only had my puppy for a year, and already can't remember what it was like in my house without his companionship. I am so very sorry for your loss.

On the other hand, what a gift you gave to Mallard to release him from his pain and his suffering, rather than keeping him on for yourself with no regard for his own comfort. What courage it took for you to let him go. You should be proud of yourself for what you gave him in return for all he has given you.

Emmie

A pet is a loyal and loving friend and companion. It hurts to lose them so much. They give so unconditionally. My thoughts are with you. Know that your loving friend is at peace now.

((((((Robin))))))))),

My heart goes out to you. The loss of your pet is the loss of a family member. Go ahead and mourn the loss. It was a brave and loving act you did letting your Mallard go. Nobody wants to see the people or pets they love suffer. As long as they are in your heart, they still live. Diva posted a poem recently on the loss of another pet. It's called the rainbow bridge. Look back for it. May it give you some comfort.

In sympathy,
Karilynn
