Still learning.... Literature & Sponsor

Does anyone have recommendations on al-anon literature? I am reading "How al-anon works" and have found it very helpful. I'd love some advice on where to go from here.

I'm the child of an alcoholic, so anything geared towards this is especially helpful.

Also, how did everyone find their sponsors? Through local meetings? I'm having trouble connecting with anyone at the meetings on a one-on-one level, but maybe it's just going to take some time.

xoxo

I'm brand new here too, but a couple of books that I have started and am finding really helpful...

One Day at a Time in Al-Anon (out of print but you can order it at Amazon)

Codependent No More (not an Al-Anon book but addresses OUR challenges)

Hope that helps.

Hi...  Welcome to MIP, and glad you found us....

One of the great book recommendations for ACOA's would be:

"Adult Children of Alcoholics" by Janet Woititz"

As for sponsorship, I think you are going about it the right way....  best choice is to go to your local meeting(s), and see whom you feel a connection with..... same thing would apply online - if you can't find one at one of your meetings, you can try the same process for an onlline sponsor...

Take care

Tom

Aloha Kate...My wife and I have a library of Al-Anon literature (other books also) and I'm on a re-read of In All Our Affairs...Making Crises Work for You.  We have the daily readers which program our thinking, feeling and behaviors on a daily basis and often during a certain crises at times.  This is the innoculation against the disease we were born and raised in.

Sponsorship...I didn't do it, then did it opposite to how it was suggested and then did it as it was suggested which worked best for me.  It was suggested that I look for a member of experience who had the characteristics I was looking for and then to ask for help, support, to be sponsored.  It didn't matter what they looked like or their accents or how they dressed or the like.  I let go of the fear of asking and asked and for that I am most grateful.  One of my most steadfast and supportive teacher/sponsors has just passed away but not in my life.

Do not short yourself by not asking.   (((((hugs))))) smile

Welcome, from one AC to another.

Here are a couple of CAL titles that are geared toward Adult Children:

Hope for Today (daily reader)

From Survival to Recovery

Don't worry about connecting with a sponsor.  When your Higher Power knows you are ready, your paths will cross.

Hi there! I know I'm way out of date here (5 months later)...

I suggest to my sponsees one book first; Courage To Change. A daily reader that helps us get our feet into the water (or so I've found, works great for newcomers that are seeking sponsorship). All other literature comes later. I have a system that I loosely follow... perhaps your new sponsor will too?

Have you gotten a sponsor yet?

I've had many, because I travel around the states alot and need some accountability wherever I am... I've asked directly "will you be my sponsor", I've been approached "let me be your sponsor" (because I was confused as to how to find someone, and ask them, to be my sponsor)... and I've also had not-so-perfect sponsors, who have helped me grow tremendously as I transitioned into a better fitting sponsor.

The fact that you've asked on here, is a great step of progress! WTG! Keep it up!
