I saw this movie Saturday night. It was a fabulous movie. I paid attention to the character of June Carter. She was such a great woman. She was Johnny Cash's(Johnny=alcoholic, drug abuser) true friend. She loved him but kept her boundaries with him. She accepted him for who he was. During the movie, Johnny is going through withdrawal and when he awakens with a sober mind, he looks at her and says that he has created such hurt to everyone that he feels unlovable. She tells him that he is a good man and can change. She believed in him when no one else did. In his biography, he said, "What June did for me was post signs along the way, lift me when I was weak, encourage me when I was discouraged, and love me when I was alone and felt unlovable. She is the greatest woman I have ever known. Nobody else, except my mother, comes close. " Isn't that what we all want? Someone to believe in us? Someone to see all of us and love us anyway?
I had no idea (he too, had drug/drunking problems) seems like so many creative ppl do.
My mother & I were g2g see it Friday - then the missing cat "episode" made it impossible for me to do anything but post signs, pray (worry) et cetera.
I DO find it funny/ironic that my step-father the main "A" in my life for the last 26 years -- keeping saying, "let's go see the Walking Phoenix movie". hmmmm

Sounds like your stepfather sees a part of himself in Johnny Cash and may be looking for answers. It's truly amazing what happens when someone loves another unconditionally. It's a fabulous movie. I want to go see it again!
I've never read a JC bio, but I grew up with alot of Cash playing in my house, blasting on Dad's reel to reel tape and watched anything that came on TV about him since that is what my dad would watch. So I was aware of his many problems.
What I'd really like to do is watch the movie and THEN go back and watch his "Hurt" video. It was powerful knowing what little I knew of him and could only imagine how much more it will be understanding more of the Man in Black.
He truly was a torn man. He understood the wrath his diseases incurred and the pain they inflicted. Many in the family and in the biz always questioned June for staying with him, but everyone always seemed to agree that she was a rock and a helluva person. She was exactly what Johnny Cash needed and I don't think we would have had him hear on this earth as long with out her.

They met for a reason and I believe it was to heal their own childhood wounds. Another quote from Johnny was, "June and I met back stage at the Grand Old Opry in 1956. She was already a veteran in Country Music, having performed with her family since she was six years old. She worked with me since the early sixties, and in her I always found a friend. Now the sharing of our Christian faith strengthened the bond between us. She is my wife, lover, friend, and my biggest critic. We work things out; heart to heart, soul to soul. We're in love." They connected in a spiritual way. God/HP can work miracles if you have faith.
They did make some wonderful Christian music together that I remember my Mom playing. All this talk of it has had their redidtion Will the Circle Be Unbroken in my head.

Jamie Foxx won best actor of the year 2005 for portraying Ray Charles -- it is a mesmerizing movie, we bought it on DVD & there is an extended version, I think valuable scenes to the story that were cut out but only make it about 30 minutes longer.
I saw it on the big screen - from the start, Ray Charles' spirit is somehow channeled thru JF, all you see is Ray -- it's a magnificent film.
It has made me love Ray Charles' music more than I ever did - I've seen it at least 50 times, I often put it on for background, like an album.
As a matter of fact, last night after seeing Walk the Line, we came home & watched "Ray".
