Desiderata

The first line of this poem was something that my Mom use to remind herself when she was stressed at the university or at home. I just came across it in one of her books. If this isn't made for us. I don't know what is.

Desiderata
by Max Erhmann (1952)

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
as remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly:
and listen to others,
even the dull and ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caustion in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for higher ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to sheild you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have the right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive him to be
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Live strong,
Karilynn

Check out the above site for an interesting history of Desiderata. It seems there is much confusion as to its origin and time of authorship. That being said, it is a lovely piece, and one which I memorized many years ago. Thanks for bringing it here to all of us. Diva

Karilynn - it amazes me that you posted this today.  I'm a regular lurker here, and take away so much wisdom from this board, but this post struck a very personal note for me.  In Feb, my dad died after a long battle with colon cancer.  Last week was our Jewish New Year, and this was the first one I've spent without him - I've been thinking about him a lot lately.  He had this poem framed and it hung in his office for at least 30 years - as long as I can recall.  He did his best to live by those words, and really did succeed.  His life was an inspiration to me, and I carry him on one shoulder and my HP on the other.  Thank you for making me smile through tears - it's a sign to me that he is always going to be here with me to help me face the road ahead.
