My Addictions

Hello my family,

I am sitting here wishing I had never once uttered the words "South Beach" and "Diet" all in the same sentence. But alas, I did. So here I am after a wonderful meal wishing for.................. you guessed it CARBS, of any shape or form.

I am doing this for me. Changing my lifestyle, eating healthy, hopefully lose a few, and Iknow I will feel better about myself in a few days, but right now, I am wanting to go to my addiction.... food.

Last year my "A" and I had a long talk about addictions. I found he is not all that different from me. We both long for certain things, but my addiction is legal, and just as deadly. When he goes out for the night I turn to food. As a matter of fact I remember throwing out a cheescake once because he was out and about doing his thing and I didn't trust myself with it. Trust me that is a huge crime in my book .

I have some Dove Dark Chocolate bars calling my name. So I came here to chat, and then go make myself something in the guidelines of phase one of the South Beach Diet, which is truly a B***H! But at least I will feel better about myself in the morning, god help me.

Love to you all, as I am sure soem of you can relate.

P.S. The fact that we both have our addictions has made us closer, he can talk to me and know that I may not know exactly how he feels, but I know the pain of denying yourself of what you want.

hi, well dear just how long are you going to be able to live like this?

What worked for me was changing my habits. I have nothing in the house that I
consider junk. Always have a fruit salad made. I put marachino cherries in it,
mandarin oranges, grapes, strawberries, watermelon. Then i put some juice i like in
it.

Always have those little carrots to munch. I like stir fry, not fried in oil though. so I
make sure there is always something like that made. This way I don't want junk.

I drink lots of water. Always have a container of ice water around.

If you like cheesecake, learn to make it with less calories and fat. Get low fat cream
cheese and there is a cheesecake dry mix you can make your own. You can add non
fat dream whip.

If I want something i will stick marshmallows in the microwave and just add some
rice krispies, no butter.

For me I had to make it real, a way of eating I knew I could stick to forever.

I don't eat much meat. But if I do, I boil or stir fry turkey breast for sandwiches or jus
alone.

Having salad always ready is good too.

If a person deprives themselves it won't work. Plus if you get good habits you don't think
about food all the time. I take a bunch of supplements too.

Since I moved out here and am living my passion, animal sanctuary, food is not that
important to me anymore. I am not self medicating with it anymore. food is
not good or bad. not eating the ice cream or candy is not good or bad.

For me I just chose health. My body has changed. I have lost fat and gained muscle. I am
not a small person, but i am healthy and people don't believe I am 52.

I honestly think Dolphin, it is a matter of making our self happy. Making sure you
fullfil your life.

You are on the right path. good for you! neat you are understanding your A better too.

Love,debilyn

Hi,

I really liked the way you owned your addictions. I have always thought my husband was the only addict but I am learning. I/we were "diagnosed" as me-love addict and him-love avoidant. Well, it is not illegal to be a love addict but at times it kills me and him. I used food/sugar to comfort myself. When I really looked at why I was using them I was able to turn away from them and make them less appealing and powerfull. And the sugar is just down right bad for me.

Thanks for your share. Good luck!

Nancy

Thanks to Debilyn and Nancy for your replies. I felt better after lettign that out. I also know that the more I work at this the softer the unhealthy vocie will get, and soon I will not be able to hear her. Just like everything I am taking it one day at a time.

Much love,

Yes, I admit right on this board that in living with my addicts recovery from sex addiction particularly I found myself at times doing the food binging thing.  Which for me was an entirely new thing, considering that up until I turned around 40 I did not have a weight problem at all.  Somehow I allowed myself to gain about 15-20 extra pounds.  I know there are times when I eat out of comfort.  I have lost an inch or two in the last month so that is hopeful.  I particularly watch not necessarily what I eat, but HOW much of it I eat and stop when I am full.  Also I eat salads and lots of fruit while it is in season especially.  Farmer's market veggies are just great this time of year also.  I rarely eat red meat at all.  I do eat chicken mostly in those Lean Cuisine or Smart Ones entrees.  I do not buy meat in the meat section, since my other half is a vegetarian.  I do on ocassion eat fish (when it's on sale).  I do take supplements also.  No more whole bags of potato chips at one setting (I try to avoid both chips and french fries).  I drink seltzer water instead of soda pop- although I do have a Diet Coke or C2 maybe once or twice a week.  The one thing I DO not to tamper with however is my love of coffee....although during the week I try not to drink more than two cups, on the weekend I may have more.

Good for you!  What's amazing that I found is that I have made my own diet per say.  I have almost completely cut sugar and starches from my diet.  I started this in April of this year.  I had to lay down to zip my size 14 pants.  3 years ago I was a size 18, got down to a 14 and all of a sudden I was struggling to get into a 14.  I do binge some on Thursday nights we have pizza night, so I eat pizza, and every once in while I eat bread, but rarely.  The great part about all this?  I eat when I'm hungry now.  Not because I am lonely, or mad, or frustrated.  I started doing crunches and butt squeezes about 6 weeks ago.  I do them Mon-Fri before my shower and work.  This morning I put my jeans on and thought how baggy they look!  Pulled out a size 12 out of my drawer and didn't have to suck it in to zip them!!!!! I have lost 20 lbs and a total of 6 inches from my stomach and behind!!!! It is a slow process but I will keep working on it, I haven't felt this good in years and I am doing it one day at a time like everything else in my life.  Hang in there!!!!!

Hugs Mary

Dolphin,

I did a LC (Atkins) diet 2 yrs ago and am pretty much still on it. I took a lot of BS from people telling me it wasn't healthy, I'd have heart and cholesterol problems etc. Of course these were all people that had never read his books or really investigated the plan. They thought all I ate was meat..lol
My standard answer was: Tell me what is good about starch and sugar, because that's the only thing I don't eat. No one could answer.

Anyway..I wanted to tell you that you can do this just like you do Alanon. One day at a time. One minute at a time if you need to. I figured I could do about anything for for a day. In 6 mo. I went from a fluffy/tight sz 12 to a sz 4. and am having no problem staying this size. Fat is depressing for me and I was tired of being there (I'm 5' 1").
I found a wonderful Low Carb site that has several message boards and several types of LC plans (South Beach inclued) plus recipes. I've made some great friends too :)
I'm sure it will give you the support you need.
It's http://www.lowcarbfriends.com

ODAAT!!! Good Luck!
