The Man in the glass

Here is a poem that my Dad said my Grandfather read to him frequently in his years growing up and my Grandfathers years in AA, fighting for sobriety. He said he has always told me to follow the girl in the mirror, and this is where he learned that from. I just wanted to share it with you all.

              Love Jeannie

The Guy in the Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

Dear Jeannie,

That is a wonderful poem!! It reminds me of the "old alanon saying" that, "Other people's opinion of me is none of my business."  If I am living with HP and in my program, god will take care of the rest.  People will see that even though I my not be beautiful on the outside, I am beautiful on the inside and that is more important than anything.  Thanks Jeannie, much love SenoraBob.

Great poem, before I read it , by the title I took it to mean the person who drinks, the glass being that that holds the alcohol. Seeing their reflection in the glass that they drink from. We can be our worst enemy or our own saviour, it depends how how much we love ourselves and want to change that which destroys us.
