Had to buy a lock today :(

Hello friends,

My 20 year old alcoholic/drug addict daughter is still in the inpatient treatment center and probably will be some time still. It has been a month Wednesday that she was admited. We now owe $1,000 out of pocket which is good for most insurance companies but not good for my husband and mines budget. ( We did commit to paying for her treatment and do not regret it). The center will work with us with payments. Another family meeting with just daughter, hubby and I is scheduled for Wednesday and it will focus more on hubby and I too. So, I am going to really try and concentrate on my serenity to be prepared for whatever comes out.  The sad thing for me today is that at the last family meeting our daughter admitted that she had stolen 2 of my ritalin pills, that I use for depression, on New Years Eve. Ritalin for me has been used to enhance the effects of my antidepressant medication and I only can have 30 pills a month since it is a controlled substance. I have methadone that I take for my chronic pain which she did not take Thank God and I also have vicodin, etc. The medications that I do not take daily are locked up in a lock box somewhere. I had no idea my daughter would take my medications. I was told by the addiction counselor that a drug addict will go for any kind of drug. Hearing that my daughter has done Lots of Drugs and all kinds the day of the family meeting nearly killed me inside. I have been able to detatch for now because she is not at home and away. The plan my daughter wanted was for me to LOCK UP the medication so it would be out of site. So I purchased a box for the day medications and a combination lock. Wow, was that an out of denial moment for me today at Walmart! I did it and it had to be done. If she tries to take the locked boxes well that is not my problem. I can only do so much. If she decides to use when she is out she will use no matter what. kWe do not keep alcohol in the house out of respect for her but never thought about the medication. She did say earlier that my medication was not a problem for her. Her mood has not been good at the treatment center either and she has been showing resistance and irresponsibility. She did sign a release so that the counselors can talk to me. That shows me too that she is serious about recovery. Things are out in the open that way. I hope my posts help others since it is hard to be this honest about my daughter. I know too that she would want me to post this with my cdb name too because she is to a place she is telling people that she is a recovering alcoholic/drug addict and wants to be able to help others too. As for my son, he is not doing so well anymore. The manager that is now in charge is going to up his own son before my son so my son will be taking a big pay loss as well as a huge demotion! Going from future owner to hired help sucks.  grrrrrr Damn, that uncle of mine! He will be looking for new jobs in the meantime and I still feel his HP will guide him. Thanks for your support and for listening to my story. cdb

Think you need a big hug. Alot to deal with and quite the roller coaster and I want you to know that your posts do really help me. Just a thought while i was reading was that maybe your daughter is protecting herself from the future when she gets out and realizes how many temptations in everyday life may or may not affect her. She is thinking ahead. I hope she does well.

Your son i sure hope that he finds something fufilling.

best to you and yours
JJ

Hi ---We had to buy a lock for our medicine cabinet..and think may still get another box with a lock..A-son stole Dilaudid from my husband who uses it for pain..He was also doing some weird stuff with Sucrets with DM ( cough drops) -cough syrup as well...He cannot be trusted..The Addiction center said they will find anything you hide!  I have meds for high blood pressure, cholesterol and bladder disease..  Unfortunately addiction program here is only 4 days and a week off then back in for another 3.. Sure is not enough!  There is another 21 day program.. but they must be assessed, reffered and be "clean" a month.. It is a crappy system here.  A-son goes in for 3 days tomorrow.. It is so hard with him living here, has no job, is rude sometimes, sleeps alot. grumpy..swears at us ----.I have been sick with flu just the add to all the stress..

You are blessed that you can have your daughter stay in longer..I wish we had the option although I know hubby wouldn't pay another cent on this kid.. Paid off too  many bills as it is. A-son has court appearance on the 16.. a firn for $450.. not sur ehow that will get paid..Hoping he can do communtity duty

I feel I have to shadow son all the time..just to see what he is up to...Did you happen to see the film on tv called Intervention?.. They did a film on two drug addicts and how intervention was brought in.. Interesting show..but also hurt to watch..

take care

~~Pam~~

Thanks jj for your reply.  I think you are right on the button with the preparation thought and I and hubby will do whatever it takes to respect her healthy wishes. Not monetary anymore, but the things we can do that she is not suppose to be doing herself. I think that is what detatching with love is anyway. The family meeting was change until Friday now too. Thanks for your friendship and support. cdb
