understanding the steps

has anyone ever seen or read the steps explained? I have a copy from a naranon site in my town and wondering if it is ok to post them to help others as it has helpped me?

Hi JJ!  Of course I just had to respond to this...heehee.  Al-Anon has several books that explain the Steps.  There is a brief summary in How Al-Anon Works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics (pp. 42 - 65).  Then there is the book Al-Anon's Twelve Steps & Twelve Traditions.  And then my favorite, Paths to Recovery Al-Anon's Steps, Traditions, and Concepts.  Might be more books out there that address them, I just haven't discovered them yet if so (still reading these ones).  In addition to the books, we have the Step Work Board, there is a link above to it here from the message board.  And every Thursday night we hold a meeting on one of the Steps or Traditions.  We just did Tradition Two tonight, next Thursday will be Tradition Three.  At the end of the 12 Traditions, we'll have a review meeting, and then we start over with the 12 Steps again.

The thing about posting from literature or books, you have to be careful of copyright laws.  Some authors allow parts of their books to be copied, others expressly say you may not make any kind of reproduction without express permission from them.

Asking how others have worked the steps is always a great way to start up a conversation in the chat room.  Basically, that is what the Step Work Board is, members sharing about how they've worked the steps.

I really encourage getting one (or more!) of the books above.  I am learning so much more just by reading them!  I started with Paths to Recovery because I had that book already, but then I got How Alanon Works and I think I'm going to really like that one too because it also covers slogans and all kinds of things that we talk about all the time, the principles, the tools of the program.  Thanks for asking about this!

Luv, Kis

Thanks for your reply, half the reason I have not been on lately is due to my research and diving in to the literature I have been reading.

Have you read "Codependent No More" by Melody Beatie I am finding it not only interesting and so informational but explanitory of feeling i have or had at one time or another. I even went out and bought all the books she has written to date.

Love in recovery
JJ
