Dependent Personality Disorder
Symptoms

This personality disorder is characterized by a long-standing need for the person to be taken care of and a fear of being abandoned or separated from important individuals in his or her life. This pervasive fear leads to "clinging behavior" and usually manifests itself by early adulthood. It includes a majority of the following symptoms:

  • has difficulty making everyday decisions without an excessive amount of advice and reassurance from others
  • needs others to assume responsibility for most major areas of his or her life
  • has difficulty expressing disagreement with others because of fear of loss of support or approval.
  • has difficulty initiating projects or doing things on his or her own (because of a lack of self-confidence in judgment or abilities rather than a lack of motivation or energy)
  • goes to excessive lengths to obtain nurturance and support from others, to the point of volunteering to do things that are unpleasant
  • feels uncomfortable or helpless when alone because of exaggerated fears of being unable to care for himself or herself
  • urgently seeks another relationship as a source of care and support when a close relationship ends
  • is unrealistically preoccupied with fears of being left to take care of himself or herself

Oh damn it. Yeah, that's me. But my question today is what does healthy look like? Can anyone post what healthy looks like? I have never seen it. And even in my meetings I see that we are all sick no matter how far along we are in the program. Change....into what? I would rather be healthy, I really would I just don't know how to be.

What does healthy look like?weirdface

Healthy looks like Love
Healthy looks like peace.
Healthy looks like acceptance.
Healthy looks like a friendly smile.

Healthy looks like me, accepting me for who I truly am with all my faults, quirks and idiosyncrasies, and learning not only to accept me, but to Love me.  It also looks like accepting everyone else as they are and just letting them be that without me trying to change them.

That is what healthy looks like for me.  smile

Yours Still in Recovery,
David

OK I'm gonna give this a shot:

Ease in making everyday decisions

Assumes responsibility for own actions and life

Not afraid to speak up for self or disagree with others

Initiating projects and finishing what you start

Nurtures self by self care and love

Confidence in ability to care for self and faith that things will work out for the best

Comfortable being alone

Has a variety of activities, interests and acquaintances and enjoys spending time on/with them.

Don't forget that "healthy" has warts and stuff :D . And maybe a pimple or two.

Great. great list CG! It's not an arrival, but a journey toward.

Kim

ETA: perhaps the definition of healthy is being ON the journey itself, no matter where you are at?

...um, this is still me on bad days, and some days when I'm feeling needy and have a victim complex. And I've been in recovery a while...
