I'm new here

I am "in a relationship" with an A and am having conflicting thoughts on whether to stay "friends" or break myself from him completely. I decided to join this group because I think it will help me to understand his situation better and at the same time not loose myself in it. Any advice?confused

Hi, and welcome to MIP....
Hmm... advice??  The first thing that comes to mind is to read the literature, and go to meetings, to find out exactly what you are signing up for....  One of the best books I have read, would be "Getting Them Sober", volume one, by Toby Rice Drews.  It was a virtual lifesaver for me.

Take care
Tom

Hi JJ and welcome,

Jump in and read, read, read. That is the thing that helped me the most. The alanon literature is great and was a lifesaver for me.

Most of all know you are not alone, glad you found us.

Thank you for your advice, I will take all the help I can get. Can I find this book on the website or just go to any bookstore? Is there online meetings I can join?

I'd have to agree that you should go through the posts and just keep reading. You can post your situation if you want and we can share our experiences with you. Alcoholism or any addiction is not fun and it gets severely worse before it gets better. If you have no ties with someone and you are able to walk away from an addict, I would advice that to anyone (not supposed to though) Staying and trying to be someone's savior only makes you go down with the sinking ship. The bad part is, you don't know it's gotten to you before it's too late. Save yourself alot of sanity ;) Good luck and please keep coming back.

I've tried being the "savior" before, that I cannot do. I don't want to walk away from someone that I care deeply about. I would like to remain friends with him, I just dont' think I can do more than that. I will keep reading and thank you.
