a great analogy for letting go...

Hello fellow (((((Alanons)))))

Yesterday I was channel surfing and I stopped on a program where a motivational speaker was speaking. It was near the end of the program and he said something that has stayed with me.

He said " let go or be dragged"

I started thinking about this.I got a visual image of a person being dragged by a car because they wouldn't let go.They go over bumps and slam into things.

Who is being hurt?
Who is REALLY in control?

I have the power to stop my own pain. The driver of the car is going to take us wherever he or she wants to go.Do I have to be dragged along? Why do I hang onto something I cannot control? Why do I tell myself I CAN control this car speeding out of control and going in a direction I do not want to go.If I just hang on tighter....show it I love it....try to take all the bumps on myself so it won't have to feel anything.Who am I kidding, the driver of car doesn't feel anything!!They have the car (disease) protecting them from the bumps and bruises.I am the one who is exposed and vulnerable!

Dragged into the drama, the turmoil, the misery?
Dragged into the twists and turns of the disease?

I can just let go.
Let go of my AH and just let him go his own way....
Let go of my controlling and manipulative mom....
Let go of my alcoholic sisters and brothers.
Or be dragged wherever THEY go.

The choice is mine isn't it? Wow. I get a choice.

Thanks for reading.
Dru

Great analogy Dru, have it heard many moons ago but it's an apt analogy for sure.

Yesteday, I saw the new video for Carrie Underwood's Wasted song.  It's perfect (cept the sappy Cinderella ending biggrin.gif).  I hope others can learn from us and let go quickly and painlessly.  Our lives are meant to be lived not endured.

Nice to see your post,
Love Maria

I LOVE that analogy!
I think it describes perfectly how resistent I am to change.
I've heard also something about relationships: "People don't have relationships with other people; they have relationships with relationships. Until they realize they're having the same relationship over and over, all they're having is relationships with relationships. And until they realize why they're attracted to that specific relationship, they're going to continue having relationships with relationships. Not people. Big difference."
WOW!

Hi ((((Dru)))

So good to see your post. I really needed it. Today I am one ball of determination....if I lean really hard to the left the car should.... you get the drift. LOL

What a day. Thanks for the reminder smile.gif

very good analogy. When I first came here, someone would say, let go of the rock.

That we need to let go of what is pulling us down... I heard that a lot, directed at me.

It is so hard to let go. I know for me I felt guilty if I did not try everything...

love,debilyn
