Need some opinions

To give you a little background, my husband and I were asked last year to start an Alanon group at our church.  At the time I told them that we could not be affiliated with the church, we would have to rent the room etc.  Recently an AA meeting was started at the same church, same time as Al-Anon and both non smoking.

This past Sunday the minister of the church approached me with the offer of putting a notice on the scrolling marque in front of the church saying something like Tuesday evening 6:30 pm  Al-Anon and AA meetings.

Would this be violating any of the traditions?  I've gotten so many different opinions some say it's ok some say it's not.  I know we are allowed to put notices in the newspaper's etc but I'm just not sure about this one.

Thanks
Barb

No it would not. You are not violating a person's anony. specifically. You are simply stating that at such and such a time al anon and aa are being offered by this institution.

Yep... I'm with Tiger..... Al-Anon "advertises" meeting schedules online, in local papers, on community bulletin boards, and even in Church (or Hall) flyers.  The "only" concern, and it is a small one, is that some people may make the connection between the Church and Al-Anon, and wrongly assume that they need to be a member of that Church to attend.  The reality is, a high percentage of Al-Anon meetings take place in Church halls.

Take care
Tom

I called the GSO and WSO and they both told me it was ok. As one of them said we are anonymous not invisible. I have asked the minister to put "Open AA and Al-Anon" so hopefully people will not think they have to be a member of the church to attend meetings.

Hi, in metropolitan DC area which covers Virginia, DC, and MD, this is done all the time with no problems.

In FL where I live now, each meeting I've attended has been held in a church. I don't believe this keeps anyone away.

I'm all for getting the word out there but...

I think if there was a big scrolling marque that announced Alanon on a particular night, as a newbie I wouldn't have went.
I was not only afraid to go I was embarrassed that I had to go. If I thought everyone and anyone that saw me pull in to the parking lot knew what I was doing....I wouldn't have gone.

Maybe everyone doesn't think like that and I was a just being a whimp, I dunno.
