My Personal Bill of Rights

My personal bill of rights

I have the right to numerous choices beyond mere survival
I have the right to grieve over what I didn't get that I needed or what I got that I didn't need or want
I have the right to follow my own values and standards
I have the right to recognise and accept my own value system as appropriate
I have the right to say no to anything when I feel I am not ready, it is unsafe or it violates my values
I have the right to dignity and respect
I have the right to make decisions
I have the right to determine and honour my own priorities
I have the right to have my needs and wants respected by others
I have the right to terminate conversations with people who make me feel put down or humiliated
I have the right not to be responsible for others' behaviour, actions, feelings or problems
I have the right to make mistakes and not have to be perfect
I have the right to expect honesty from others
I have the right to all of my feelings
I have the right to be angry at someone I love
I have a right to be uniquely me and feel that I am good enough
I have a right to be scared and to say "I'm afraid"
I have the right to have a different opinion from someone else and to feel at ease with this
I have a right to experience then let go of fear, guilt or shame
I have the right to make decisions based on my feelings, my judgement, or any reason I choose
I have the right to change my mind at any time
I have the right to be happy
I have a right to stability, such as relationships of my choice
I have the right to my own personal "space and time" needs
I have the right to be relaxed, playful or frivolous
I have the right to discover, know and care for my true self and my inner child
I have the right to be flexible and be comfortable in doing so
I have the right to change and grow
I have the right to improve my communication skills so I may be understood
I have the right to make friends and be comfortable round people
I have the right to be in a non abusive environment
I have the right to be healthier than those around me
I have the right to take care of myself, no matter what
I have the right to grieve over actual or threatened losses
I have the right to have my feelings respected by others
I have the right to trust others who earn my trust
I have the right to forgive myself, and to forgive others if I choose
I have the right to give and receive unconditional love

I agree with almost all but some of them are out of your control.  To say that I have a right to be treated with dignity and respect by others while I agree is out of our control.  I'm sure you recognize that and exercise the right to disengage when you don't get treated that way.  I just stopped expecting things of others and focused on what I need to do (most of the time....I slip alot).

I think I could sum all this up as "we teach others how to treat us".

Wow -- I had to do one of these for my counsellor about a year ago, and yours is so much better than the one I did!

That list deserves to be read and re-read regularly.

Aloha Tigger and MIP Family...try this with that list...In place of the words "I have the right" substitute "I have the ability" and see how it comes out.  In my journey thru recovery I learned that from all the inventory work.  I don't need permissions or laws today for me to exercise my abilities...HP guidance yes the other stuff no so much.

((((hugs)))) smile

RE:  the phrases I have a right and I have the ability.......

I tried the suggestion and noticed how I felt when I used either phrase.  Having a right gave me a sense of defensiveness - but saying I have the ability made me feel powerful, as though I've got choices.

Positive post!  Tigger, you led people to begin thinking of what they can do!  Thanks
