Love flows only to the open heart

I was in the animal shelter, today, my "doggie visit" day with pockets full of biscuits and lots of smiles and comforting things to say to the homeless ones...

I am going down the rows, "chatting up" with Pitbulls, German Shepherds, Labs, all kinds of lovely and deserving pets..One young fellow was so excited to see me, he nearly jumped the height of his cage door in excitement....high energy to be sure...

After the visit, i am walking out the door and a very sad looking fella had this puppy,  pitbull and lab...my favorite breeds, on a leash surrendering her to the pound as he had found her and wifey did NOT want this "will be 50-60# pound pitbull/labrador"  so hes turning her in....the puppy saw me and literally fought to get out of his hold and to me....when he loosened his grip on the leash, the puppy (maybe 12 weeks old)  glommed onto me and just SAT...next to me...then as I was petting her, she laid her head on my leg as I crouched down to visit and she looked up at me and never took her eyes off me...The shelter officer asked me if I wanted to "give it a try"  I said "yea, what the heck..never could resist the eyes of a puppy"  so I took her in my car, expecting her to pee or doo doo or act up, but naaaw...she laid in my lap and crashed out....

so when we got home, I bathed her...clipped her nails...wormed her for hook and round worms...injected her with her first booster shot....then gave her some peanut butter and pumpkin seeds for any tapes she might have in her....she ate her supper like a bear....I hand fed her and let her "share" her food with the 2 other dogs so as to teach her not to be food aggressive.....WHAT a nice little pup!!!

I took her outside and she did her first act of "protecting me"  she barked and fur standing up, told this grocery bag, floating around on the porch,  to "back off...shes my mom and i'm not gonna let you hurt her"

so yea, I question her taste, but she was BENT on going home with me.....the other two doggies enjoyed this new addition ole "fat girl" even shared one of her toys.....

OK....time to see if she can produce a nice #2 for me as she ate like a bear at supper and its been time enough for the food to be headed towards her tail end.......

terrible pics, she was in crate....i'll get some more later.....I'm still finishing laundry and gotta do my workout....shes in her crate, wanting attention again, but I have to , if I know her needs are met, let her cry so she doesnt' associate crying with my jumping to attention...Like right now, she's just been out for a walk...shes in her crate, crying because she thinks that will get her out again.....No!! its not!!! later?? yes, but right now?? no!!!! she settles in pretty quick, tho, gotta admit, she is one sharp cookie....she saw the oldest dog getting a cool "draft" from the toilet and she joined right in.....I keep the toilets very clean because the dogs prefer that to their bowls that get stale no matter how much i change the water....I asked an engineer was it safe adn he said the very water that comes into the bowl is the same water i bathe in and brush my teeth with.....sounds icky, but when you're a dog, COOL is the rule!!!!!

Rose,

Thanks for sharing her pic! She is soooo cute!  Agree.. this may have not been her best moment. She looks a little perturbed. Not naming any names or pointing any fingers but.. maybe with the one who put her in the crate?

Sounds like she found a good home with someone who will take good care of her. :) TT

hey Tired...actually she isn't doing half bad for her 1st night...and believe it or not, dogs, being den animals, actually "warm up" to their "den" crate....I've had wonderful sucess crate training puppies re: using the restroom and "its time to be quite now" time....so really, she is whining a bit but its her first night....she is stressed out, being in new home...a week or so and she will already settle in....this little gal is no dummy....she learns really fast....I have to let her whine and when she is quiet, i'll go and get her out for last potty time, then cover her crate with a light blanket or sheet so she will settle in and know that its bed time......crates are the most humane and easy way to train a young dog....my 8 year old and my 1-1/2 year old enjoy their crates...i leave the doors open for them and they go in and nap and settle with a biscuit, then come back out at will..........when puppy is totally house trained, she will have her "bedroom" door open as well and can go in and out as she chooses., but that is a ways off yet....i estimate she is about 12 wks old....she was found by this guy, wandering the alley and when I got her home and cleaned up, etc., and fed supper, she was soo starved....poor thing, heaven only knows when she last ate, but give me a couple of weeks with her and she will be nice and plump again, like a puppy should be....

Last night was a bit tough...first night for both of us,  breaking in, adjusting, etc., she got me up at 3am to go restroom...good girl..no accidents in crate....we just had breakfast and she had her restroom break and is now resting in crate....its an adjustment...she ran right into her crate when restroom break was done and it was time to come back inside...the other dogs have accepted her.....the older puppy has a new playmate.....I think after a few days, she will settle in and I'll get some better sleep....its not just I who is adjusting to this change...SHE is too...all this is new to her...I would be fretful too if I were here and she really isn't doing badly at all...quite good in fact for one only 12 weeks or so.....

What a beautiful post, Rose!

Perhaps you were meant to be there that day, giving out love to the shelter dogs, just so she can "find" you. Since I have a rescue dog, I have always loved the car sticker, "Who Saved Who?" - incorrect grammar and all - as that is how I felt/feel with my furbaby.

I work with dogs all day... you are so correct when you say that crate training is the best way to train your dog... they do see it as their "den," and become quite attached to their "safe spaces." It is great that your other dogs accept her... but then again, it is obvious you are "alpha" in your pack, and you came home and said, "This is how it is, period," so they accepted her.

I look forward to reading of her new life in your wonderful home!

Oh Rosie! Puppy Blessings!

You have been deemed Worthy; you have been Chosen! Very estimable on your part to bend to the will of HP and The Puppy and take her home straightaway. It took a few twists and turns, and she wound up right where she was going--to the arms of a loving PuppyMama who happens to pretty much have a vet clinic on the side.

And she is gorgeous--I have seen that expression, that attitude, in our next-to-last acquired kitten. When our vet saw him at 6 weeks and about 20 ounces, he declared "This will be your Alpha male." And I asked how can you tell? He's so tiny. "Just by his attitude and his actions--he doesn't take nothin' off of nobody." And he was something else--and the joy of our hearts. You of course are Alpha female in your household. Cats are something else. Dogs have owners, they say; cats have staff. Ours do a lot of fraternizing, however

Take the parts you like, etc. but I am reminded of the saying: When God closes a door, He hands you a puppy. I mean--doesn't the world just seem way brighter today.

Our daughter swears by crates. She doesn't have dogs anymore, but she's got a cat who demands to be put in his crate at night. It's a medium wire cage, with his hard carry case and bed and water and sandbox. And when we got our last kitten, from her, he was a not fully reconciled to the whole idea feral born. And we had him in a bigger setup like that And after he settled down and we opened the gate, he'd still go back in there for naps and comfort

Oh and I remember--when we ordered 6 soft carry cases, one for everybody, in case we have to evacuate sometime, we set them up in a row to gas out and those two would go and get in them. Higgins, the Alpha, would get into his carry case anytime we got ready to take him to the vet.

Didn't mean to usurp your thread and go all feline on you. And thanks for sharing. I'm happy for all of you.

Hugs!

hey ((((Temple)))) You post all you want on my thread....LOVED your kitty story......and yea, it was meant to be....poor little gal...1st night she was nervous and cried and whined so i had to take her for walkies, then LAST night it was the diarrhea from the change in diet, (regular and good food) so walkies every 2 hrs. so today I was a zombie, exhausted and ready to crawl in a crate for ME and just expire, LOL

hey Posies, I think she KNEW!!! its like she saw me in the pound and before I could even open my mouth to volunteer to take her in, she glommed onto me like "here I am...get over it and take me home"

shes a sharp little gal...today we played outside in good weather and she is already barking at "things" living or not that are near her turf....she absolutely is my shadow....she and my older puppy will be best friends, but first they have to sort out who sits closer to me as I try to use the restroom in peace....oh shut the door??? they sit outside and stick their paws under the door....2 black ones and 2 copper colored ones and they squeak....so I open the door and give them a bit of toilet paper to play with and distract them with while I "take care of nature business"

shes in her crate, its time for walkies again, stools are looking back normal, no signs of worms...yaaaaay!!! but I will do the pyrental ea. month till she is older and out of that "may get worms" stage and I can do it every 3 months

the other dogs love her...very patient with her....i just may crash out in living room couch and let her sleep under the coffee table that she has claimed for her space....so she and the older puppy can share their spot.....

Its funny how brighter the days can be when you got something with soft fur, a plump , bald little belly , who follows you around everywhere and barks and growls when a perceived "threat" comes near me, like that ugly plastic bag...then the neighbors kind English bulldog decided to visit by my gate and all THREE dogs were barking, just daring that dog to enter....so he repaid their hospitality by lifting his leg, peeing on my gate and sauntering off to his house.....

yea, this baby is something else...I am not letting dogs I don't know near her until she is fully protected against the dog diseases that go around.....

thank you all for your warm, kind shares on this thread.......I think she is gonna be real mellow, and a good protector and just a good little friend

This got me thinking about dogs, and coming to appreciate the gift of companionship that they offer especially when they choose you.  I'm not a fur baby person generally (I know that I can't commit to living in one place for too long so vowed never to take in an animal until I knew I was ready to never move: still hasn't happened). In spite of my vow, which I made some 18 years ago after having to leave the worlds best cat (he thought he was a dog you see, and would wait for me at the end of the driveway in a cul-de-sac off a very busy road every day without fail) I have been adopted by two dogs since then. One was near his end but he was so loyal. His eyes were human and we met as he grieved the loss of his master. He would be sitting there at the end of the driveway next door looking mournfully off into the night and honestly his sorrow was palpable. We came to trust each other; he got a bit of life in him towards the end before an injured leg caused so much pain he had to be put down. Beautiful creature.  The latest one to move in has but three legs yet he never backs down from a fight with bigger, scarier dogs. He shows his teeth in a fierce snarl and if that doesn't work (which it usually does) he doesn't run, he goes all the way. He is a fighter and yet so gentle with his human even though life has obviously been a bit mean to him. He showed up with his ribs visible; there was no way I couldn't feed him. The ones that live here are also sweet in their own way but one is huge and I think would be better on a large property far far away from a main road. He gives me anxiety because he runs like a horse and doesn't look. Means no harm, but is not the sharpest tool in the shed and I think is too old to retrain.(I think he is about four?) At times I have found that dogs are far more honest than people and it is a gift when they choose you like your puppy has picked you. I wish you two every happiness. Thanks for the thread and the opportunity to reflect on our canine companions.

Hey Posies...yea, ALL my critters are rescues....even the birds, LOL....and yea, this baby was meant for me....I've seen the bumper sticker you mention....."Who saved Who???"   yep...  glad you agree with the crate..Wish more folks were aware...it keeps the pet safe...out of dangerous, possibly life threatening mischief (chewing electrical wires, getting into toxic stuff , etc.)  and also, they are "den" animals....and yep..I am the alpha, LOL

dear A41..what a beautiful story about the older doggie...I'm so glad he had you at the end....love the doggie with 3 legs but maybe 2 hearts??? sounds like a toughie....bless his heart.........LOL@ "not the sharpest tool in the shed"  yea, I had a doggie I had to re home because she would literally LEAP up in the air, and has almost cleared my fence at 7 months old???  I had to re home her...Found a lovely couple who had lost their fur baby to cancer and were ready to adopt...I was very picky whom I gave "Shammie" to, but glad I held out and waited because this older couple were PERFECT for her.....and I don't think they are too old to train...I've fostered older dogs and taught them many things:  proper leash walking...and other commands....Like humans, they crave to learn and be intellectually stimulated...I am so glad to see you sharing about your canine buddies.......I always say, the more I see of people of late, the more I love my dogs, LOL....Humans can learn from the creatures....unconditional acceptance they show...zero judging...100% loyalty and honesty about their needs, feelings, etc., and eager to please, but not shy about saying their needs, etc....my living room looks like a big toy box as she drug from my office toy boxes, all the ones she likes and so shes one happy camper now

(((((((((Jozie)))))))))))  I get where hubs is coming from....when I lost my old yellow lab, I cried for at least a month, but then decided to transfer my grief to a needy animal and I adopted....I went looking for someone who needed me as much as I needed them and found her....a sweet, black lab who nobody wanted because she was fat and black and black dogs get passed over a lot....I adopted her and she was a love....kept her till she was 11 and one day she just could not get up...had to take her in and put her down so as to not let her suffer....yea, each loss (too bad dogs don't live as long as humans or at least half that long)  but anyway, I would rather have the tears of a loss, then the long term emptiness of NOT having a fur kid to love and share with........I hope your hubs can come to a place where you two kind folks can get another fur child....sooo many loving, adoptable, acceptable pets "out there" needing homes,  homeless through no fault of their own...I always say, there is no bad animals, just bad owners....unless a dog has become just UNsafe to be around, i will try to help them....I got 3 now..budge won't allow for anymore, but I will still volunteer here and there at the shelter, and do what I can to stop abuse and help the ones who are lost find their owners or at least get them off the streets, take them to shelter in hopes their owners come get them........

I've known you in recovery for 10 years now??? you mentioned 10 years ago you got into recovery....all I can say is WOW!!!! Alanon looks so good on you.....You have a big, beautiful heart....this planet needs more folks like you.............HUGS

(((((((((((((Temple))))))))))))))))  "Principessa Pupparosa" what a mouth full...LOL....cute name......I posted her pic on facebook...."Help me pick name for my puppy"   I was vacillating from Lucie to Sofie and just could not decide...the few who partook in the contest/plea for help, most of them picked Sofie....so Sofie it is....she answers to it....LOL....

So how are all the kitties doing???? I absolutely loved your sharing your felines with me...

I never was a cat person, but I have had a few capture my heart...I remember this one little paisley looking , scruffy, very confident little feline charmer, who was a baby at the time, I was out in the yard, this was back in 1994, I think and I am talking to my yard guy and this little kitten walked up to me,  rubbed her (needing a combing) matted fur on me and just glommed on to me...I tried to find her owner...No one stepped up...she followed me everywhere, so I took her in....she lived with me for 17 great years...she "raised up" a few puppies for me...fosters and permanents" and she never complained....was a great "mouse  catcher--my built in pest control"  she would get up in the attic, stay a while, and then jump back down through the hole in the garage ceiling, hop on the truck and back into the house....at age 17, she was unable to use her litter box, just would "go" where ever she was., appetite went off, I knew she was wanting to leave...I had hoped she would "pass" at home, but it would have meant lots of suffering....they know...they speak to me with their eyes...she was ready to go back home, so I took her to vet and did the  humane thing....boy, did it hurt...driving home trying to see through my tears, I miss her to this day.....I never have had in the past, nor going forward a cat like her....she was the absolute best kitty I EVER knew in all my life......she walked on a leash, knew little tricks...slept on the foot of the bed....and like I said, I don't know HOW many young dogs, she "helped me" raise up............so yea, I did have a very sweet experience with a kitty

Principessa Softikins. Because she definitely is a princess.

Named one kitty Buffy. Then back-named him Buford Pusser.

Big Jake had a cartoon I loved "Porchy! What kind of a name is that for a car? Sounds like something a ballet dancer would call his cat." I've since wanted to name one Porsche and call him Porchy.

I'm so glad you bonded with a kitty. She sounds like a once in a lifetime special kitty.

Here's a doggy story. After her divorce, my daughter went to Italy for a year to study Montessori And she left Cassie, her easy-going mutt, who had always deferred to the Cocker Spaniel male, with her future employer. The woman had big male dogs who slept with her. After about a week, Cassie decided Mommy and the children weren't coming back apparently, so she jumped on the bed and chased the male dogs off and that is where she slept until she was retrieved. I would love to know just what she was thinking. She had never slept on the bed before, btw.

I will do a better pic. This one was not good

Now this is not a very dignified picture of her but its the only way I can get her to hold still while Im trying to take a picture or a video LOL anyways she is the tidiest puppy. For somebody so young, she will not go in the house or in her crate. She has had only one accident since Ive had her and that will be a week tomorrow. She will bug me to go out. Very tidy, very good little house pet. This puppy is a joy to be around

((((((Temple)))))) LOVE your names...just love them.....and Buford Pusser, really made me laugh, that is the funniest name for a kitty....I wonder what the babysitter thought of Cassie jumping in her bed, and chasing HER fur babies off.....that is too funny and the males actually left the bed to her, LOL......I just love "critter" stories....You know humans could learn a lot from pets if they would just take time and observe...Just watch them.....this baby, I put her on a leash , tied to the stove bottom, so she can have the entire kitchen, and maybe 20% 0f the living room..couch is right before you go into kitchen so her favorite place to crash is by the couch between coffee table and couch because that is where yours truly lies watching TV and with my back spasming again on sunday, i've been sleeping there so as to be forced to lie still and stabilize my back..I rebound fast , so soon, i'll go to my bed and I'll have to figure out a place to "park the puppy" in the bedroom so I can sleep all night and last night she went ALL nite before waking me up at 7am to go to restroom.....the short video I showed of her, sorry, but its the only way to get a good head shot at her, but the wind started up and its getting cold, and I am in my night dress, so too cold to extend the video some more..Wind all of a sudden gusted , so we all scurried in the house when everyone was done with the restroom......

Her friend was very sanguine about it all. The whole household accepted the new Alpha canine --gender was not a factor

Around here, everyone bows to the will of the 6 pound ball of fur who lives with her huge son in the "studio" down in the back yard. She has a banshee scream and nobody wants to hear that She only uses it if frightened. Her human put them out due to allergies and they found a cushy place here. Don't worry--no paint fumes. I'm not allowed to "paint" in there--it is a heated/air conditioned hoarder's lair/retreat.

I can't find anything to click on to see the video. It may just be my computer--I think it is possessed.

It's been fun here in the animal corner. I hope you keep posting pictures and stories about Babykins. Her Softiness.

Hey Temple. I am laughing about that 6 pound ball of fur. Size doesnt mean anything in the animal world. Its all about Moxie and guts LOL

Missus puppy is in her crate because she has to learn that there are times she has to be in her crate when Im doing chores etc. and she is one angry camper right now so if I let her out now, she will think all I have to do is cry and mom will let me out so I have to wait until she has been quiet for a while and then I will let her back out on her leash in the kitchen

Your computer is not possessed. I took down the video because it was not really a good one and so later on I will do another one and let you see that video. So I erased the link off my post. I will get another one later on and post it. Yes this is the critter corner LOL

There is a beautiful orange mail kitty, I call Junior, who wonders between my house and my next-door neighbors house that I am trying to catch so I can bring him into the shelter and get him neutered and then they let you return the kitty back to his home turf, minus his breathing apparatus. Weve got a few feral cats and I and another neighbor R trying to help with this problem of breeding new baby kittens who also turn Farel . I havent seen Junior for a while. I hope he is OK. Hes not a very big fellow and what has me worried is there is a huge possum hanging around next door and they can prey upon small animals. Im hoping that Junior is as smart as I think he is when it comes to escape I have grown to like this young cat, I dont want another cat per se because of my budget, but I would like to help Junior, I got out a crate and built a nest sort of that would suffice during the cold months for him to get into. But I havent seen him.

I will let the little monster out of her crate pretty soon as she is been a quiet good girl and I will get a video and post it for you today.

This is so much fun talking about our critters. I am having fun with you, that little 6 pound ball of fur has my deep respect LOL

I tried to on "quick reply" post links of the dogs....Got blocked as "spam" If this option doesn't work (using the quick reply) then i'll have to let it go....dunno why my links are giving me trouble...IOS 12 makes you get into youtube THEN upload your camera to it so it can post my videos on my channel....I hate this...it balks and you have to fight to get your vids to download to your computer or to share with others.....

Anyway, I tried...Time to accept...move on...let it go.....Maybe I'll try to post more videos, or just one at a later date when energy is better....

"I will let the little monster out now because she has been a good girl."

Now who is laughing out loud. Does this doggy think she is a cat? Does she have a dual personality? Or has she got it figured out that after three days or so this is a permanent arrangement and she can just be herself--like Cassie. I believe I mentioned I saw will, intelligence and leadership qualities in those eyes. And I'm betting on your prevailing.

Oh--I hope Jr. is just off courting and he comes back soon. FurBall's son is named Liam--she is Gretchen. I didn't name them. Liam is 14 pounds of tangerine fluff. Beyond orange. He and Maow-Maow, former feral from our daughter's 10 or so rescues from Florida (she didn't listen to the end of trap, neuter, release) is same weight and Maine Coon lookalike. They've gotten to the stage that they don't always bristle at each other or hiss but they do low growls. Husband used to fling himself between them when they'd square off because he knows Maow=Maow does not back down and Liam is fearless. Maow-Maow had Liam up a tree the other day, so perhaps there's been an understanding and now detente.

Two beautiful girls just came to the door. Slender, delicate, perhaps mixed-race identical twins, selling school candy. I asked if they enjoy it or if it is a hassle with people asking dumb questions, like me. They seemed somber. They said it is miserable. Because they have to share Everything. Daddy is waiting in the fancy red truck, but we ascertained that they are very close to each other. I told them it will get better and it will be a comfort to always know that there is another person on the planet that really gets you. And to remember you are not alone. And to hang in and if they are being abused or mistreated to find someone they can trust and tell. And that they deserve a good life and they will have it. And to embrace their beautiful, curly hair if they haven't already. Because you know how that goes--most every girl wants the kind of hair she hasn't got.

I think how giddy and upbeat my 11 best friends and I were all through jr. and Sr. high and it breaks my heart. And some had crazy parents and some had very limited means but we were joyful and we had each other and we didn't keep many secrets among the group. Nobody had to bear anything alone

I try to stay neutral when it comes to grown ups but kids and animals are another thing. I have whispered to a child whose awful mother is browbeating him in a store--you are precious and you deserve to be happy and treated well and never forget this and that was a long time ago and I wish I had said, and tell someone you can trust. To the losing it mother, I'd say, "Oh you have such beautiful children I know you must be so proud of them."

It may do absolutely no good and then again it may give hope--or a bit of a wakeup to a parent. Sometimes I read stories on the boards and I think I wish somebody could have been there when that person was small or vulnerable to say you did not deserve this and you are loved and you always have been and you always will be. And you are worthy beyond any hint of uncertainty

To a friend who was feeling as if she wasn't living up to whatever mark whomever had placed, I reminded her''You made the cut--you were born on this planet. You were chosen. Don't ever have any doubts about any of that"

End of Mother H's curtain lecture to--I guess to the ether. I'm not just talking to myself, because I already know this.

Hugs!
