Courage to Change (C2C) 11/1/16

Today's reading talks about 'all that is Al-Anon'.....what this means is we arrive, and no matter how defeated, broken, crazy or other we are - we are invited back.  Many of us are grateful for this love and acceptance, no matter our condition when we arrive.

For many, Al-Anon is the last hope.  The disease has beaten us down and we are hopeless and full of despair.  As those who came before us invite us back and encourage us to 'be a part of' the solution, service, recovery, etc. we are thrilled to be accepted and loved as we are - imperfect.  Most of us are loved by others in recovery before we realize how to love ourselves.

Being active in recovery through service, big or small, enhances our personal growth and spiritual journey.  Doing anything from talking with another or making coffee helps us more than the output we expend.  Being a part of a local healthy Al-Anon group enhances our lives, enriches our program and supplements our spiritual condition in great ways.

Today's reminder ---  Listening, hearing, thinking and reading about a spiritual awakening are fine, but if I really want this gift, there is something I can do about it; I can get involved.

Today's quote from Aristotle --- "What we learn to do we learn by doing."

~~~~~
When I first came to Al-Anon, I already had exposure to recovery, the 12 Steps and the traditions.  It made perfect sense to me that in order for me to keep growing, I had to make room and give away what I could to others.  I'd been active in service work for a long while, and truly believed that, "When anyone, any where reaches out for help...."
I have always had nervous energy and am far from shy, so from the beginning, I was willing to help any way possible.  I have opened the hall, set up chairs, gotten out literature, made coffee, collected donations, district positions, social events, etc.  I have always felt better while doing - anything vs. not doing.  As my mind cleared, and my esteem normalized, I was able to see a direct relationship between peace in my heart/mind and doing service....big or small.
Action for me helps take me out of self, and focus instead on something, anything that is moving forward.  In recovery here, we say that you are either moving forward or going backwards.  There is no standing still for those in recovery - we don't plateau and stay still with peace, joy, contentment, etc. - instead, we are giving a daily reprieve contingent completely upon our spiritual condition.  If we are feeling off-center, it's a personal, spiritual malady that we can adjust with our program and action.
I am grateful that each day, I must turn my life and will over to the care of God, as I understand him.  I can feel 'it' when I don't and my spiritual condition suffers when I shift my priorities.  I am so grateful that I arrived in Al-Anon with the gift of desperation, and had enough pain to listen and act upon what was suggested.  I no longer stay stuck in my own brain, but instead know my HP wants me happy, joyous and free...he puts people and situations in my life to help me grow in a positive manner each day - I just have to BOLO (be on the lookout)!
Thanks for being here MIP family - I've finally figured out that I have not been sleeping well as I woke this morning with a horrible tooth-ache and a swollen face....*sigh* - I clearly have an abscessed tooth and it hurts beyond belief!  I'm going to chase down some care today - doctor or dentist and am way off my game!  Pray for my tooth to heal and make it a great day all!
(((IAH)) positive thoughts on the way for your success in obtaining treatment and pain free healing.
I love the principle and the Quote from Aristotle: "that We learn by doing "
Alanon practices what it endorses and welcome everyone as well as offering opportunities of service to all. I believe that we give service simply by attending meetings and listening with an open mind as well as serving in more active roles as literature person or treasurer and chair. We also suggest that recovery is a process and that it is progress not perfection that we seek.
Thanks for your service and I pray that you feel better soon.
