Work Decision

Hi Everyone,

I received a job offer last week and am still in the process of negotiating.  In the meantime, I had another interview the same week for another position. I have interest in that position also.  They will be offering second interviews.  The timing isn't very good.  I will likely have to accept or reject the current job offer soon. I can only buy so much waiting time.

I emailed the hiring manager at the other job to ask where he was in the process. He responded that they are in the process of checking references and will be conducting second interviews with the person who currently holds the position. This person no longer holds the job because they had a baby and was trying to work from home. The hiring manager told me that just wasn't working out. He said in his email they'll we know more at the end of this week.

I am seeing where this is going to cause an overlap.  I am going to have a discussion with the recruiter of job number one tomorrow morning but wonder after negotiating if I will be able to let any more than another day pass if they get right back to me and are willing to meet my desires.

This would mean if I am called for a second interview by job number two that I would be attending that interview having already accepted another position. The hiring manager of job number two is aware that I have another offer and has had my references for nearly a week.

I realize the interview process and selection can differ greatly from one employer to another but job number one has literally pursued me right from the beginning. I'm tiring to not to project past history on current circumstances here. My kneejerk reaction is that although the hiring manager of job number two expressed great enthusiasm concerning me at the end of the interview and I emailed a ty with my references the next day, he isn't all that excited about me. He's aware that I have another offer but this isn't changing anything in his process of interviewing nor did he determine in his response that he is even considering calling me in for a second interview.  I'm trying to leave emotions out of this and look at what the facts are in this situation.  I have a job offer for a challenging and possibly exciting position with a large employer. It has benefits and growth potential and there is the prospect of job number two becoming a reality. Job number two is with a very small company which has very good benefits as well and is a supervisory role. Job number one's recruiters have consistently followed up with me for three weeks. Job number two's hiring manager expressed great interest but despite know I have another offer which I was going to be discussing today; didn't make an executive decision to call me back in asap.

Admittedly, job number one frightens me a bit. Although I'm use to working on my own, there is a national as well as global responsibility whereas job number two is for a much small employer and the job seems much less ambiguous. So maybe I need to write out facts about these two opportunities and inventory what is attracting me and repelling me concerning both jobs.

Ultimately, I'm not sure where my responsibility lies if I am called for the interview for job number two and have already accepted an offer with job number one. Employers don't seem to have a problem eliminating people's job so I'm not sure if it's considered unprofessional to change your mind and accept a different position these days. Well... I may not even have to cross this bridge.

A few things I already know is that job number two is managerial with my own office and feels safe (may not be but feels safe).  Job number one is non managerial, no office, a new job I can help shape and will be challenging (maybe in a good way, maybe not).  So now I just feel silly!  Of course I can do job number one well. I don't have to know everything on the first day.  I guess I need to ask hp where hp wants me to be. I think I'll get the answer.

I'd be interested in hearing others experience in making decisions concerning and asking for what they deserve.  Thanks for letting me share.  TT

Wow TT that is a tough call. I can relate to being a little nervous to learn a whole new job. I've been there on a few occasions. In your case it seems that Job #1 really wants you on their team. I would not let that opportunity slip by for another job that may not even pan out. You can accept the offer from Job#1 and still go on a second interview with Job #2. If by chance Job #2 offers you the position you will have to see if they can match the offer of Job #1 and decide from there whether to tell Job #1 you've changed your mind which you're certainly entitled to do. But right now Job #2 has not offered you the position. Although it sounds to me like that is the one you really want. Good luck!

I have always accepted a job offer when it was given. I have no ESH

concerning waiting one possibility against another. It sounds like you

need to weigh which is the safer move. For me, I would need the

reassurance that I would not be without an income. I also am the

type to want the job with the most challenge, but there again it

could not be at the sacrifice of not having a steady pay coming in.

I also do a lot of research as to the financial stability of a prospective

employer, which also would play a big part in my decision.

I am like Debb - I accept a job offer when it's given. If the two were processing at the same time, and you had two choices, then ... we'd be talking a bit different here.

Here's my 'opinion' - take what you like and leave the rest....

Job # 1 - they want you. They believe in you. I can tell you from prior experience I would NEVER offer a job to someone I did not think would be a good 'fit'. As a former hiring manager, that decision was based on skills, personality, interview, follow-up, etc. I have always felt it was my job as the manager to make sure you were successful, felt successful and felt it a good fit.

I realize that's hard to tell from the interaction so far, but you'd be amazed with experience how well hiring managers can assess fit into a position. So - if they want you, they want to teach you, train you and have you be SUCCESSFUL. If there were any doubts, they would not be pursuing you....go for it and don't fear the unknown!!

I do also agree that if Job # 2 calls for a second interview, and you want to attend, feel free. Again, as a hiring manager in the past, I would NEVER EVER want to hold back an employee if they had a chance to improve their place in life!!

(((TT))) - you are worth it and I'm excited for you. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers as this all comes together for you!

Thank you (((everyone))).  It was very helpful to hear your perspectives on working Alanon to make this decision.  I'm so grateful for your es&h, suggestions and your support and encouragement.

I officially accepted Job 1 today.  Job 2 didn't accelerate the process even when I let them know that I had another offer.  So I guess hp is trying to kick my butt out of my comfort zone. I won't be working in the small company with a big office of my own. Hp is sending me into another global organization with a world of possibilities and a chance to work from home sometimes.

New beginnings are always a little scary but it's exciting in a very good way!

I came here first to tell you! :)  Well.. second I told the bf first.  I have a little more time off before I start the job which is nice.

Yay, I get to enjoy the end of the summer! sun.gifparty.gif     TT

Congrats. TT - Yay for you!!! I'm so sure it will be great to work again and so happy you are done interviewing.....that and the wait for feedback are the least likable parts of a job search!!

(((Hugs))) to ya and way to go!

Thanks (((everyone))) for all you best wishes!  I've yet to interview anywhere that isn't going through all sorts of changes and from the employee reviews I've read it doesn't look like this place is an exception if what people have posted is true. I don't totally dismiss these reviews but I'm not going to give much weight to them right now. It's a new job and fresh start for me. I'll make up my own mind as I get acquainted with the job, culture, my coworkers and especially my new supervisor. It may be a little while until I can work from home and it's suppose to only be one day a week but at the location it seems people work remotely more often. It would make me happy if I could do that too after learning the ropes.  As with everything else, my plan is to take it one day at a time and keep my program close and my higher power closer.  Thanks again for helping me sort through all of this.    TT

Congratulations, I was leaning toward's job number 1. I currently work for a very small company and really would rather be at a bigger company. It sounds like you were taking care of you and listening to all the potential red flaggs. Great work.

I'm late to the party, but congrats on the new job! I've worked at large and small companies and both have their pros and cons. Stability is pretty important to me now though, and it's harder to sink the big ships. In my younger days I might roll the dice on a young company I really believed in, and hell I still might still do that if that's where my life takes me, but with two kids now? Give me the company with some staying power. Job#1 sounds like they're on the ball and have an established HR department. Job#2 might be learning the hard way that they're in need of an HR department.

Good luck!
