Temptations for me as an oldtimer and traps to avoid

I have a confession to make.  I've been in the program at varying degrees for over 1/2 my life.  Ego can come jumping in from time to time to plop an arrived hat on my head because I have made progress in this program.  When that happens, if only in my own mind, I can become a teacher/speaker/knower at all times rather than just being one of many people working towards the goal (for me) of being increasingly true to my Higher Self and experiencing the increasing benefits of Peace/Serenity - not just once in awhile or a few days a week - but most days.

The reminder that I don't know it all and nobody else does either is something that helps me stay more grounded and real.  When that hat gets plopped on my head, something happens that can turn me upside down if not outwardly but inwardly, and I find myself returning to my place in the Circle of life and in the Al-Anon program with other human beings who are always arriving but never get totally there.

I have had the good fortune of spending a lot of time in what I'd call intensive Al-Anon therapy at MIP.  I've learned so many words, slogans, phrases and program tools that I couldn't have learned any other way.  The groups in my locale don't have all of what I've been fortunate to have learned here.  I'm grateful for all of you.  I'm grateful for what you teach me.  I'm grateful that we are walking this journey together as we are one day at a time.  Thank you for being a reminder to me that I don't know it all.  I won't ever know it all.  And that's okay.  Progress is enough.

Great share G2B - It is lovely to accept that we are all works in progress and that is why it works .

And how many times have you said that phrase on the board? "We are all works in progress?" It is music to my eyes. Thanks, Betty. Anytime you want to go for a nice slow drive, just let me know. I'm good at that. I love all the new friends I make along the way, too, always waving, waving, waving. Smile.

I can relate to all you say here grateful. My ego can inflate at times too. I can get into the mode, well im in alanon so im right and your wrong, lol. Sounds ridiculous but im trying to have humility and all it takes with me is stop and think like the reading said in one of the readers recently. Who the hell am i to tell anyone they are doing it right or wrong? Ive got it wrong my whole life mostly, its only now im trying to get it right and so far so good but it took so many mistakes and lessons to get here. How can i expect everyone to know what i know, i cant steal another persons lesson either or prevent the lessons from coming, they were good for me in the long run so why do i feel the need to stop the learning from happening in others?

My sponsor and i share early morning chats, usually i get the good stuff from her but the other day she was telling me she had a bad day and we got talking about perfectionism and procrastinating, ive brought this up here on the board and i began telling her what ive learned, well she was so grateful to hear this and she wants to talk more and how she heard exactly what she needed. I was pretty chuffed with that and my ego goes kaching, i could use this to tell myself how great i am but really it came from here, so back down to earth and in reality. Thanks grateful.

Passing it on together is so much easier than thinking its all up to us, isn't it el cee? There are things the gal I sponsor has helped me learn or see in a new way, too. We truly are in a fellowship of equals and that, to me, is very, very freeing. Thanks for your share, elcee. I learn from you, too.

This has been my experience too even though I don't have mear the amount of time in program as you. What you described about MIP is also true for me.

Debb, Jerry, Pinkchip, Paula: Big smile and lots of hugs.

elcee: New word - chaffed = very pleased. Kaching? Is that the same as Ka-ching - the sound of a cash register? Or another Scottish slang word I just can't find?

Jerry:  Another new Bird of Paradise found in Hilo?

Paula:  I've already pm'd you on your new avatar, but......I still have to exclaim here:  Another wow and wow and wow.  Those colors are eye popping.  I love what you can do with paint, brush, tile(?) and your artistry.

Mark:  Every time I look at that cute dog's face and read your posts - I can hear the dog talking and I know it isn't.  Makes me laugh.

Debb:  Every time I look at your face and read your posts - I can hear you talking - and that makes me smile.

Grateful yes and I call it the "yellow" bird as I did the "red".   They are relatives of the true Bird of Paradise which HP has done such admirable art work with and then they have their differences.  I will show more later.   ((hugs)) wink

Good. This flower appears to be so delicate yet maybe a little prickly on the ends?

Great post and ESH for me here! I love this post and have to practice humility also. I have been in al-anon face to face meetings for over 4 years now, which isn't long but it feels like I have come a life time away from my dysfunctional past and now living in a much better present. I at times want to force feed al-anon to people, because well they need it. I keep forgetting about the part in their time or God's time and not Karen's time darnit! The world would be such a better and healthier place, haha! Sending you all love and support!

Great share Grateful... like you I have been in the rooms for half my lifetime now... bin there, done that, seen it all... been through all of the emotions...

as I rift down through all of the shares I can see a lot of stuff... some of that is just ~understood~... and quite a lot of that is ~more to learn~ ~more to grow~ more interest and excitement in what we can achieve... smile...
