People not affected by an A

I was on an online social media page where people were saying that they were going to Al-Anon meetings even though they weren't affected by someone's alcoholism. One specific person said they were going because it helped them with their spouses PTSD. This sounds wrong to me. I don't think anyone not affected by someone's alcoholism should be going to Al-Anon meetings... That's why they have support groups like coda and PTSD groups. Is it just me or is it wrong? To me they are disrespecting Al-Anon and the requirements.

Derman I believe that many are in denial and that it takes a great deal to actually accept that alcoholism is running rampant in many families .

There is a reading in the ODAT to this subject. A person attended alanon because she could identify but did not see alcoholism in her home After a year of attending meetings, she discovered the truth of her family. The reading suggests that if a person feels connected at a meeting who are we to disagree.
I just keep the focus on myself, live by alanon principles and Let go and let God

It is up to the person going to decide if Al-Anon is right for them. I had a continuing question for years in Al-Anon - how did I end up here.  How did I end up marrying an A?  There are no As in my family. I could see it in my husband and in his family. I was blind to how it affected myga own - the disease was so hidden and secretive. It wasn't until my own son developed the disease even though I'd been in Al-Anon and drug myself to it and my kids to Al-a-Tot and Al-a-Teen and my sibs aged that I began to see just how prevalent that disease was in my family of origin although the focus tended to be only on one drinker in whom the disease had progressed severely or in uncles only by marriage. Booze commercials alone(that try to avoid litigation by encouraging consumers to be responsible with their drinking as if an A can or will do that or be that) and friends who can't seem to enjoy a meal out without "a wine or two" tells me how we are culturally affected by this disease. Be at peace. The people attending who don't say their qualifier drinks, might start with one reason and find out later they're really in the program for the purpose it was developed. On another subject, glad that you attend Al-Anon and know the reason you are there. The scales of denial have dropped from your eyes as they did from mine with the help of the program and continued attendance and working the program.

I think this is a good question, im not sure what the correct answer is. Personally, I feel the more the merrier and If I was the prime minister alanon would be part of the school curriculum, lol. Its a philosphy for all aspects of life. My home group are quite strict and direct people who have been affected by drugs to na, they talk about dilution of alanon and a mixed meeting is frowned upon on a national level as far as I can tell. I know that people are encouraged to sharetheir experience with alcoholism and if someone shared on other issues my group would not allow it for long, dont really know if this is right or wrong to be honest.x
