Benefits of Journal Writing?

Tonight, I found an old USB and plugged it into my laptop.  I didn't know what was stored in it.  To my surprise, I found journal entries on an assortment of topics.  It was from a year or more ago.

It was so beneficial to read.  I'll spare ya the details as to why  smile

But me being me, I wondered if there had been any research or writings about the benefits of keeping a journal.  So I turned to Google and found loads of info.

So writing does help us in so many ways.  I know that Al-Anon encourages writing.  (Still don't have a sponsor to tell me to write biggrin).......

Anyone interested in knowing the benefits of journalling, just Google and discover them.

As for me, I'm going to stop avoiding what my gut has been suggesting I do for a lone while.  I've avoided writing for many reasons that I'm beginning to be aware of.

enuf said.................onward..............  journal here I come  smile

I actually have a private, my eyes only blog. I also have a blog I've written on for several years.

I have learned so much reading back.

I also know that when I'm writing it requires me to be brutally honest with me. The truth comes out in my writing.

If it's for your eyes only, then you can take what you wish, and leave the rest... Or you can say, hey this is useful how am I going to change this.

I'm a big fan of writing it out, it's why I love this board so much. I can write out and learn so much here!!!!

Hi Gail

Thanks for the topic.

I found that I resisted journal ling because of an irrational fear that my words would be read by others--- I have lived alone for over 20 years. confuseI realized that was just an excuse and ventured into writing my thoughts at the end of each day and found it as a powerful tool.

Great message

Gail,

First of all, I just love your cats especially the big white one with the little head.  I have a extra large fluffy black one with a tiny head and very large yellow eyes.  She is just the most precious lovable soul.

I am a big believer in journaling because it is my personal belief there is healing in the writing.  I journal every day and sometimes am surprised at what flows out of the pen onto paper.

I never have googled the benefits of journaling but will take you up on your suggestion.

Thank you for the topic today.

xoxo,

Tommye

I have been journaling since I was 8-and that's a LOOOONG time, because I'm old! I keep them all, and have found that not only is it helpful for me to write, but I get a lot from going back and reading the old ones. It often puts things in better perspective for me.

GAILMICHELLE: YOU GOT ME ON A ROLL TODAY! YOU KNOW WHAT? I FOUND AN OLD 4TH STEP INVENTORY, AFFIRMATIONS, ASSESTS & LIABILITIES, ETC. A FEW DAYS AGO FROM 1998 BEFORE I GOT MARRIED TO THIS AH. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT MY HP GAVE THEM TO ME NOW THAT I HAVE GROWN. MY RESENTMENTS ARE FEWER & MY POSITIVE OUTLOOK IS THROUGH THE ROOF!

JUST SAYING TO YOU THAT TIMING IS EVERYTHING SOMETIMES.

Thanks for all your replies.

One reason I didn't like to keep a journal was that I didn't want anyone to read it too! Last year, I lived alone and began to journal but stopped. The thought of what if I die and someone finds my journal and read it!!!!! I felt I couldn't be honest because I wouldn't want anyone to think I was nuts are hurt his or her feelings because of what I had written.

However, after reading the few entries that I kept on an USB, I do see the value.

For one thing, writing helps you become clear of your believes. Once on paper, I can examine them to see if they are true and serve me well. I've had and still have so many limiting believes. Writing helps me to identify them more easily.

But I've got to be honest or it's a waste of time.

Any who.......I'm tired tonight after a day's work. I'm barely thinking clearly. So hope this all makes some sense.

Thanks to all that replied!

Oh Tommyecat,

The white cat with the small head LOVES to EAT! He's currently on a diet. He gained about 2 pounds since we adopted the kitten. We'd forget to put the kitten's food up, and the white cat (Shadow) would go behind and lick the dish clean! It's very telling!

We call him Shadow because when we first got him, he followed me around everywhere I went - was right there, just like my shadow.

Gail,

That is exactly what my black cat does!  I have three cats and she will eat everyones food which is why she has a little head and a big tummy.  She is just so absolutely big and beautiful though.  I need to take a picture of her big yellow eyes and long wiskers.  She is just adorable like your cats are.
